USO Junior Qualifying Draws, OOP Are Up
Thanks to commenter "latenighter" for finding the qualifying draws. It's a huge frustration every Grand Slam to locate junior qualifying information.
Anyway, the boys went very deep into the alternate list--33 by my count, while the girls didn't go past 15. Melanie Oudin isn't listed in the qualifying draw, so she must have received the final reserved wild card in the main draw. I think both special exemptions in the girls side were needed for Canadian Open semifinalists Rebecca Marino and Jade Curtis. Stephanie Vidov and Allie Will were recipients of the reserved wild cards in qualifying. The biggest upset of the junior tournament will be if Gabriela Paz of Venezuela doesn't advance to the main draw.

Why were there so many withdrwals in the boys qualifying?
Some results have been posted on the tournament home page on the USTA's web site:
Chase Buchanan lost 6-4, 6-2 to a player over a year younger than him. I'm guessing this is the last wild card he gets until he starts winning again. How do you go from beating Luncanu to this? I'm at a loss.
Kudla lost to Tomic 6-3, 7-6(2). That's certainly respectable.
Britton beat El Mihdawy 7-6(4), 6-4
It appears that all of that criticism regarding the choice to give Egger the wild card was well founded. I heard that he got creamed 0 & 2 by Micini today in the first round and Micini is only 5 months older than Egger. Not surprisingly, Micini hits the ball hard.
As for buchanan I was never overwhemled by his X factors. It won a lot when he was younger becuase he was so much bigger but other kids catch up. Also he was playing a lot more tennis than his peers as he essentially spent his freshman year playing tennis 24/7 , on the road with team USTA and Martin VanDowlen, or whatever that coaches names it. he made his leap early and leveled and that happens. ing is game but not a few poured
Does High Performance pay Egger's airline ticket and accomodations? If he had to pay, it really wasn't worth it. It could hurt his confidence being mopped up like than. When will High Performance understand that a players EARNS the right to play up after he exhausts the current competition. So who was reponsible for the Egger WC, curious minds want to know!
I was wrong. Buchanan has been given a wild card into the Kentucky International Tennis Derby. Formentera and Carleton have also received WCs. Three spots remain open. Seal has received some sort of exemption it appears (it says "16E" next to his name).
I'm surprised to see that Rhyne Williams isn't participating. It's a big tournament.
To the dude...
USTA pays absolutely nothing for a junior qualifier. Any qualifier pays their own air, hotel, food and entry into the tournament. If they qualify then USTA will pick up 1/2 their hotel rates through elimination....just like the other grade 1 ITF's....they assume the players room with each other. The main draw players are given a daily food stipend which doesn't get you past breakfast.
There is no way to to do the US Open juniors on the cheap, I think I heard that this year the USTA is giving an extra grounds pass to the family if they qualify....whooppee!!
