Boys Matches Cancelled Tuesday at Wimbledon; Zsilinszka and Li Post Wins for U.S.

A torrential downpour replete with thunder caused Wimbledon tournament officials to cancel the 32 boys singles matches scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Wimbledon and Southlands College.

Four U.S. girls did complete their first round matches Tuesday between the irregular rain delays, with No. 14 seed Reka Zsilinszka and Veronica Li advancing. Zsilinszka, who was the first match on court 11, defeated British qualifier Jessica Jackson 6-4, 6-2, and endured only one rain delay. Zsilinszka kept her errors and her moon balls to a minimum, while Jackson had great difficulty keeping the ball in play, and compounded that with some very shaky serving. Li, who played at the Southlands College courts, defeated Russian qualifier Julia Gavenko 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Qualifier Julia Boserup fell to Kristina Kucova of Slovakia 6-4, 7-5 and Melanie Oudin lost 7-5, 6-4 to British wild card Anna Fitzpatrick. Oudin, who will be a U.S. Fed Cup hitting partner prior to the tie with Russia later this month, wasn't entirely happy with her play, even though she came back from 5-1 in the second set to give Fitzpatrick a scare.

"I felt I didn't play my best tennis," Oudin said. "I think I made too many errors. She played very well. Her serve was great. She aced me a bunch of times."

The actual count was ten aces for Fitzpatrick, while Oudin failed to register one. The other Fed Cup hitting partner, Easter Bowl champion Gail Brodsky, was scheduled to take the court against British wild card Tara Moore, but another match was moved to her court--a women's doubles contest--and even that never got underway, as the rain continued to fall, leaving the outside courts too damp for play.

A total of 17 girls singles matches were completed on Tuesday, and a decision about Wednesday's order of play has yet to be announced.

It looks like they may have to play "first to four" sets like they did at Roehampton to finish this tournament by Sunday, plus play multiple matches on a single day (and that's just singles!). And even then it's going to be difficult considering that more rain is in the forecast.

I love Wimbledon, but it's the most frustrating tournament in the world.

There actually was one boys singles match completed on Tuesday. Italy's Thomas Fabbiano, the 15th seed, defeated British qualifer Niall Angus 6-3, 6-1 at Southlands College.
