Tien and Giavara Add Singles Titles to Sweep $15Ks in Irvine; Damm Wins $25K in Dominican Republic; Three of Top Four Boys Seeds Out of Roehampton J300 in Round 1; 19 Americans on Monday's Wimbledon Schedule

Learner Tien and Haley Giavara won their first Pro Circuit singles titles Sunday at the $15,000 SoCal Pro Series tournament in Irvine California.

The 17-year-old Tien, who had not finished either of his matches against Oregon's Quinn Vandecasteele when they'd met at No. 2 singles this spring in Pac-12, ended the qualifier's attempt at his first pro title today 7-5, 6-2. Tien, who played ten matches for USC this spring after a lengthy wait to be declared eligible, had lost his first Pro Circuit final last fall, while Vandecasteele had lost in his first final last week at the SoCal Pro Series tournament in Los Angeles and was playing a fourteenth consecutive day.

Tien, the reigning Kalamazoo 18s champion playing in his first tournament since reaching the semifinals at the Roland Garros Junior Championships last month, won the doubles title yesterday, with Ohio State rising freshman Bryce Nakashima.

The 22-year-old Giavara also took the doubles title Saturday, her first pro title, with rising Stanford freshman Katherine Hui. No. 2 seed Giavara, who recently completed her senior year at Cal, got her second title quickly, defeating top seed Jia-Jing Liu of China 6-1, 6-3 in the singles final today.

Giavara and Tien are entered in SoCal Pro Series tournaments in Lakewood, where the circuit ends after tournaments there next week and the week after next.

For more on the titles, including comments from both Giavara and Tien, see this article from press aide Damian Secore.

Tien wasn't the only Kalamazoo champion to win a title today, one day after 2015 and 2017 Kalamazoo champion Patrick Kypson claimed a Challenger title in Colombia. Nineteen-year-old Martin Damm, the 2018 Kalamazoo 16s champion, took the title at the men's $25,000 ITF World Tennis Tour tournament in the Dominican Republic, beating No. 4 seed Liam Draxl(Kentucky) of Canada 7-6(5), 6-4 in the final. It's the fourth singles title for Damm, the No. 3 seed, but his first this year after returning to hard courts after several months competing on clay.

The women's singles title in the $25,000 tournament in the Dominican Republic went to former Oklahoma standout Martin Capurro Taborda of Argentina. The No. 6 seed defeated No. 2 seed Gergana Topalova of Bulgaria 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 for her third ITF WTT title and the first above the $15,000 level.

The Roehampton grass wasn't kind to the top boys seeds on opening day of the ITF J300 there, with top seed Juan Carlos Prado Angelo of Bolivia, No. 2 seed Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez of Mexico and No. 4 seed Cooper Williams of the United States eliminated. Wake Forest rising freshman Luca Pow, a British wild card, defeated Prado Angelo 7-6(6), 6-3; American Alexander Razeghi took out Pacheco Mendez 6-3, 6-3 and Italian qualifier Filippo Romano defeated Williams 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).  The only other American boys joining Razeghi in the second round are Kaylan Bigun and Roy Horovitz.

Only three US girls advanced: top seed Clervie Ngounoue, Tatum Evans and Ariana Pursoo. All four top seeds in the girls draw advanced to Monday's second round.

Wimbledon begins Monday, with 19 Americans in action. Michael Mmoh made it into the main draw as a lucky loser, with Filip Krajinovic withdrawing, and is scheduled to face Felix Auger-Aliassime.
