Fifteen Americans Through to Wimbledon Second Round After More Rain Delays Completion of First Round; Krajicek and Pegula Top Mixed Doubles Field; Eight US Juniors Begin Wimbledon Qualifying Thursday; Ishii Defeats Top Seed Ngounoue at ITF J300 in Roehampton

The weather was expected to be better than it turned out to be Wednesday at Wimbledon, with rain hanging on through the early afternoon to stymie any opportunity to complete the aggressive schedule of 84 matches.

Although four players have advanced to the third round, including top seed Iga Swiatek and No. 2 seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic, ten men's and seven women's first round matches are still not completed, or in some cases, have not even begun.

All the Americans did finish their first round matches, with seven women and eight men, of the 32 in the draw, advancing to the second round. Twelve of them will play their second round matches on Thursday, which again has a promising weather forecast, but three of today's first round winners are not on the schedule: Madison Keys, Madison Brengle and Christopher Eubanks(Georgia Tech).

Wednesday's first round matches featuring Americans:

Doubles competition, originally scheduled to begin Wednesday, will begin Thursday, with 12 of the 32 men's first round matches and six of the 32 women's first round matches featured on the order of play.

The mixed doubles draw was released today, with Austin Krajicek(Texas A&M) and Jessica Pegula the No. 1 seeds. Desirae Krawczyk(Arizona State) and Neal Skupski(LSU), the two-time defending champions, are the No. 2 seeds. The original schedule has mixed doubles beginning Friday, but with all the rain the first three days, that seems unlikely.

Qualifying for the Wimbledon Junior Championships begins Thursday at Roehampton, with five US boys and three US girls vying for spots in the main draw.

The US boys are Alexander Frusina[9], Maxwell Exsted[12], Cooper Woestendick[13], Meecah Bigun and Adhithya Ganesan.

The US girls are Alanis Hamilton[8], Anya Murthy[9] and Martina Marica.  Marica, 223 in the ITF junior rankings, was the 24th alternate into qualifying, but was still able to get a spot in the 24-player qualifying draw. The trio of Alexia Harmon, Theadora Rabman and Ashton Bowers, who were the next three players into the main draw, are not in qualifying, so they all may have moved into the main draw. Harmon is the subject of today's Tennis Recruiting Network article, where she explains her change of commitment from Auburn to Pepperdine.

Australia's Maya Joint, who previously represented the United States, is the top seed in the girls draw; Lasse Poertner of Germany is the top seed in the boys draw.

The past two days of rain also had an impact on the ITF J300 in Roehampton, although the singles semifinals are set for Thursday after several players were required to play their third round and quarterfinal matches today.

No. 5 seed Sayaka Ishii of Japan took out top seed Clervie Ngounoue 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, ending the American presence in the singles draws. Ishii will face No. 4 seed Renata Jamrichova of Slovakia, who defeated Joint 6-3, 6-1. The other girls semifinal features No. 7 seed Ena Koike of Japan and No. 8 seed Tereza Valentova of the Czech Republic.

Wild card Viktor Frydrych of Great Britain has advanced to the semifinals, with the 17-year-old defeating Federico Cina of Italy 7-6(3), 6-3 to set up a meeting with No. 8 seed Joao Fonseca of Brazil. Fonseca won two matches on Wednesday, reaching the semifinals with a 7-5, 7-6(5) win over 2022 Eddie Herr champion Arthur Gea[16] of France.

In the top half, No. 6 seed Ilihan Radulov of Bulgaria will face No. 3 seed Yi Zhou of China after Radulov eliminated Antoine Ghibaudo of France 6-2, 6-4 and Zhou defeated 15-year-old Thijs Boogaard of the Netherlands 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The quarterfinals in doubles were not completed, but there is still one American alive in the girls doubles: Thea Rabman, who will play her quarterfinal match with partner Luciana Moyano of Argentina Thursday and, if they win, the semifinals will follow.
