Still Time to Pick Your Winners of the NCAAs

Those of you who have been waiting for the completion of the first two rounds to pick the winners of the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships have two more days to make your choices. See last Monday's post for details.

I'm not able to provide links for every regional final, but I've picked out a few of the closer ones for further reading. The Michigan men's regional that I covered was actually the most competitive region of the 32, if you consider scores alone, as it was the only one that did not have a 4-0 decision in any of the three matches.

The notable upset on the men's side was Oklahoma State's 4-3 win at No. 11 seed Tulsa, and when I checked out the details, I was surprised it included a loss at No. 1 for OSU's Oleksandr Nedovyesov. The bottom of the Cowboys' lineup had been its problem most of the year, and while I think Tulsa's Arnau Brugues is a great player, I would have thought Nedovyesov would need to take that match to give his team a chance for the win. (Nedovyesov's win was the only point OSU got in April when they lost 6-1 to Tulsa).

For those of you who don't read comments (and I know there are a lot of you), you may have missed this link about Pepperdine's Andre Begemann's tremendous poise in the team's 4-2 win over Stanford. He competed despite the news that his mother had passed away in Germany the night before, honoring a request she had made when they had spoken the previous day.

Illinois was down 2-0 against LSU before taking the next four points, winning a match for the first time this year when losing the doubles point.

Florida State had a 3-0 lead evaporate before freshman Clint Bowles overcame a hiccup or three of his own to take a third set at No. 2 singles to give the Seminoles a 4-3 win over University of South Alabama.

On the women's side, there were two seeded teams that didn't advance to Tulsa, with the Florida State women one of them. The No. 14 seeded Seminoles dropped a 5-2 decision to Texas and No. 15 seed North Carolina lost to Arkansas 4-3. The other down-to-the-last-match regional final saw No. 11 seed Vanderbilt scrape past Kentucky 4-3.

The Tennis Recruiting Network has a report on Division III men's tennis today by the expert at the d3tennis blog, and also a handy list of links for all the other national championship competitions taking place this month.

If Ok. State wins 2 of the top 3 singles and 1 of the bottom 3 singles along with the doubles point they can pull off the upset of U.S.C.
