Harrison Creates Sensation at U.S. Men's Clay Courts

It's been a long but uneventful day of travel, and I returned to my Kalamazoo den to find that the whole tennis world is buzzing about Ryan Harrison's win today in the main draw of the U.S. Clay Courts in Houston. To see the list of players he's now joined in winning an ATP main draw match before his 16th birthday, see this story on atptennis.com.

For a report on his straight-set win over 95th ranked Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, see this story from the Associated Press. Nick Bollettieri (no, Harrison doesn't train there, but he is an IMG client) also took note of the win in this blog entry.

hi colette
ryan switched from wilson to babolat? strange move... any contract info?

Colette Lewis said...

Ryan was with Babolat for quite a few years before switching to Wilson. He went back to Babolat after his agreement with Wilson expired at the end of 2007.

where does he train, if not at img?

Colette Lewis said...

He trains at John Newcombe's Academy, where his father Pat is a coach and assistant director.

How much of a surprise is it to you that Harrison qualified and has won a round?

On a side note, three stories about Tomic's role as 'orange boy' at the just-completed Davis Cup tie.

Might not be of any interest to you, but thought I'd let you know just in case.

Because of the surface, I am surprised by the result against Cuevas. (The qualifying field was not impressive). Harrison's game is best suited to grass or hard courts, and to be honest, I thought he was still a year or more away from a big win. Like Tomic, who is 2-3 in Futures tournaments since his qualifying win at the AO, I think Harrison will take his share of losses in the lower circuits, but this win is an indication of what he's capable of.

Great win for Ryan. Pat was my coach in high school and Ryan was out there holding his own and even beating us sometimes at age 7.

Agree w/ COlette's assessment but looked at Harrison's ATP photo was surprised how buff he has gotten in the last 4 months. His body has matured significantly since the last time I saw him play.

Great win, indeed! As Ryan Harrison seems to be doing so well on clay, does anybody know if he'll be playing at Roland Garros in juniors?
Thanks for your answers.
