Lucky Loser Cotet Stuns Moneke at All-American; September Aces

©Colette Lewis--
Tulsa, OK--

With second round matches beginning, I don't have time for a full report, but I wanted to get a photo up at least of TCU's Cosmin Cotet, a lucky loser and last player in the draw, who this morning upset No. 2 seed Steven Moneke of Ohio State 6-1, 6-3. I didn't see all the match--there was way too much else going on for that--but Cotet caught Moneke way behind the baseline on several occasions and came up with perfect drop shot winners, no small task with Moneke's quickness. Cotet disguised all of his ground strokes well and served big throughout the match, and Moneke could never get a rhythm or an opening. Like Alex Slovic at this year's NCAAs, when he was the last player in and reached the semis, Cotet's win says a lot about the depth in college tennis.
