My US Open Junior Recap; Svajda Faces Jodar in Winston-Salem Challenger Semifinals; Suresh Shines in Davis Cup; Klugman and Stojsavljevic to Move on From Juniors
I'm still not quite finished with the 2025 US Open. I've done a separate post with an emphasis on the US Open outside the actual tennis played; today's article for the Tennis Recruiting Network summarizes the junior championships, which I recommend if you weren't able to follow my daily coverage. Still to come is a photo gallery of the American juniors at the US Open, which will be featured at the Tennis Recruiting Network at a later date.
SMU junior Trevor Svjada reached his first ATP Challenger semifinal today, beating No. 2 seed Murphy Cassone(Arizona State) 7-6(3), 6-2 at the Winston-Salem 75. The 19-year-old from San Diego will face 18-year-old University of Virginia sophomore Rafael Jodar of Spain, who defeated No. 3 seed Mitchell Krueger 6-3, 6-2. Jodar, who turns 19 next week, is in his fifth Challenger semifinal, all of them since March.
In the top half, Christian Langmo(Miami) defeated Antoine Ghibaudo of France, a sophomore at Kentucky, 6-4, 6-4 and will play No. 4 seed Jack Pinnington Jones(TCU) of Great Britain, who beat Ohio State junior Aidan Kim by the same score.
Pinnington Jones is the only seed remaining in singles, and the doubles final Saturday will be between two unseeded teams. Noah Schachter(Texas A&M) and Andrew Fenty(Michigan) will face Daniel Milavsky(Harvard) and Venezuela's Juan Jose Bianchi(Boston College) for the title.
The Davis Cup tie in Delray Beach has been delayed by rain, so no results from there yet, but in Switzerland, being played on indoor hard, India leads the Swiss team 2-0 after singles. Wake Forest senior DK Suresh defeated ATP No. 155 Jerome Kym, who had just reached the third round at the US Open as a qualifier, 7-6(5), 6-3. This is a continuation of the impressive summer Suresh has had, with three ATP Top 150 wins since July for the 25-year-old. Sumit Nagal, playing No. 1 singles for India, defeated Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-3, 7-6(4), so India needs only one more point to advance out of World Group I into the 2026 Qualifying First Round in January.
At the WTA 250 in Sao Paulo Brazil, Indonesia's Janice Tjen is through to her first WTA semifinal, beating Alexandra Eala of the Philippines 6-4, 6-1 today. The former Pepperdine All-American, who is 98-11 in professional competition since graduating in May of 2024, will face No. 6 seed Francesca Jones of Great Britain in Saturday's semifinals.
The BBC posted an article Thursday featuring two of Great Britain's top junior girls: Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic. Klugman, who turns 17 in February of 2026, and Stojsavljevic, who turns 17 in December, will be concentrating on ITF Women's World Tennis Tour events rather than playing junior going forward. The article does address the issues they have with the WTA's age restrictions limiting the number of women's tournament they can play, but neither appear to feel they have much to gain by continuing to play other juniors, even those they encounter at junior slams.
