Kenin Ousts No. 4 Seed in Orange Bowl Opening Round; Three Eddie Herr Champions Earn Victories in 16s Division

Plantation, FL--

Fifteen-year-old Sofia Kenin has been posting impressive results this fall, reaching the quarterfinals at the ITF Grade B1 Pan American Closed and last week's Eddie Herr, as well as reaching the final of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational in Orlando.

She added another big win on Monday, defeating No. 4 seed Helen Ploskina of Ukraine 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of the Metropolia Orange Bowl at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center.

"I had a lot of confidence going into this tournament," said the Pembroke Pines, Florida resident. "I knew she was a really good player, crafty, and she kept on slicing, so I knew I had to be patient. Each time I won a point, it was a battle."

Kenin, who is closing in on the ITF Top 100, said she is learning to be comfortable when she takes the court with the world's top juniors.

"I feel like I can be at this level," Kenin said. "Before, I didn't really know if I could compete. But after how I did at Eddie Herr, it really boosted me up, and coming back here, it's really helping me."

Serbia's Ivana Jorovic, the No. 2 seed in the girls 18s, struggled in her opening match before defeating wild card Mia Horvit 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.  The 16-year-old Jorovic, who did not play the Eddie Herr, saved a break point at 2-3 in the third set and broke Horvit in her next two service games to survive.

Top boys seed Alexander Zverev was having all sorts of problems with his serve and was down a break in the second set of his match with Gabriel Hocevar of Brazil, who served for the set at 5-4. Hocevar never got a set point however, and his opportunity evaporated, as Zverev raised his level in the tiebreaker to post a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory.

No. 3 seed Tornado Alicia Black showed signs of cramping in the second set against Dzina Milovanovic of Serbia, and what looked like a routine win turned out less so, with her 5-2 lead in the set disappearing. But she broke and held to avoid a third set in the 80 degree temperatures, taking the match 6-2, 7-5.

Three Eddie Herr champions made the three-hour drive from Bradenton to Plantation yesterday afternoon and were back on the courts Tuesday morning, with little time to celebrate, rest, or adjust to a new playing surface.

Eddie Herr 16s champions Alfredo Perez and Abi Altick collected straight sets wins, with Perez beating Aleksandar Kovacevic
6-2, 6-0 and top seed Altick downing Svetlana Maslova of Russia 6-4, 6-3.  Eddie Herr girls 14s champion Sofia Sewing needed a bit more of an adjustment. The No. 6 seed, who received a wild card into the 16s, was blanked by Stefanie Hazell in the opening set, but came back for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
