Smash Junior Cup Deadline Next Week; Oudin Helps USA Defeat Argentina in Fed Cup

As in years past, the girls 18s winner of the Smash Junior Cup will receive a qualifying wild card into the WTA Family Circle Cup, a Premiere event paying $1,000,000 in prize money that will take place in Charleston, South Carolina April 11-19. Last year Mallory Cecil won the qualifying wild card, but due to injury, was unable to use it, so finalist Nadja Gilchrist took her place. Alison Riske, a semifinalist last year, is already entered again this year, as is Elizabeth Begley, who like Riske, trains in Hilton Head. The entries for the girls 18s and the other nine divisions close next Sunday, February 15th. See the TennisLink site for details on the Level 3 Southern section tournament. The next junior tournament I'll be attending is the 18s Spring Nationals in Mobile, Alabama, and the entries for that event close on February 19th. Please see the TennisLink site for more information.

Kimberly Yee, the girls 12s Winter National champion, got some belated recognition from her local newspaper, the Las Vegas Sun in this article.

And in a damp Surprise, Arizona today, the US Fed Cup team came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Argentina 3-2 and assure themselves a place in the semifinals against the Czech Republic. After Gisela Dulko had taken Argentina's second point with a straight set victory over Jill Craybas this afternoon, Melanie Oudin came back from a set down to defeat Betina Jozami 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to pull the US even. Then Julia Ditty and Liezel Huber won the doubles match 6-2, 6-3 over an undoubtedly exhausted Dulko and Jozami. Results and stories from the weekend's Fed Cup action are available at fedcup.com.
