Semifinals Set at ITA Women's Indoor
Usually I would devote much more time to covering the women's team indoor in Madison, but the 14 hours of tennis each day I'm watching at the men's competition in Chicago has made that impossible.
Jason Berney of the ITA has posted a release on yesterday's quarterfinal matches, and unlike the men's tournament, both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams survived, with No. 1 Northwestern just squeaking by Duke 4-3 and No. 2 Cal beating Georgia Tech 5-2. Georgia and Notre Dame are the other two semifinalists.
For all women's team indoor results, see the ITA tournament page.

The women are really getting short changed at indoors. Look at every post here and they dont even have live scoring. It's like no one cares. Kind of disappointing for the host school to tank. Also, disappointing for journalists to tank.
Rachel -- there is a live interactive blog on the women's site and it is very timely and informative. I'm following the matches with zero delay.....check it out.
The women got short changed from the very get go, with the ridiculous format they use up there, in addition to no live stats. The "live" blog UW is running was sketchy, at best.
I still can't believe the Florida women only have 6 players on roster. And Megan Alexander got injured, so yesterday and today they had to default one doubles match and a singles match, so they were down 2-0 to USC and Fresno. They did battle hard, losing 4-3 to USC but beating Fresno State 4-3. They opened with a 4-3 loss to UCLA.
Looks like Notre Dame is proving to be underranked, same with Georgia, very impressive win yesterday. I think they may take this title. Northwestern squeaks by Duke, playing without Iyer who is hurt. Cal seems to be a team that no one talks much about, but they continue to roll on.
Disappointing weekend for Stanford. I can't imagine they expected to lose 2 this weekend.
Saw here Miami rolled through Stanford today in Madison. Probably worst showing ever by Cardinal at this tournament. Wonder if this means Coach Forood will decide to "boycott" this tournament too?
Rachel,
What obligation does the site have to provide equal coverage? She can't be two places at once. Also, if you knew the history of this site (see: ZOOtennis) you'd know it came from coverage of the USTA boys championships, jr. boys tennis so there tends to be a little more coverage of men's college tennis. I understand your point re: Wisconsin/host school though, but don't lump the two together.
Rachel,
Perhaps you could rephrase your comments without using the slang. It makes half of what you've written completely unintelligible.
wow, there is very limited live scoring at womens indoors. it is awful. how can they be allowed to host
I agree. They should move this event elsewhere. There does not seem to be adequate coverage at all.
To repeat - at the women's indoor, the interactive blog is even better (more timely) than the updates you get on the men's site. Right now, i know the point score of the deciding doubles match. Right now it is 8-7 GA, with NU serving to get into a tiebreak. It is very good.
With 4 team matches being played at once this weekend, the live blog was not better than the live scoring at the men's. I followed both this weekend and the women's updates were sporadic, at best. They had trouble getting power out at certain courts, so the blogger had a runner, going out to all courts to get scores. Then the runner had to leave, so the blogger had to do it themselves. Only when there was one team match left, and the blogger moved to that court, did the updates improve. But for the majority of the tournament, the live blog was anything but live and Wisconsin really did a terrible job with this tournament. In years past, I never recall it being that bad.
Scott,
Keep in mind that this is an indoor event and the rest of the NCAA season is spent outside. As a result, while a win is always very nice, it needs to be looked at in context. That is most significant on the women's side where the bulk of players have a game style that isn't at all suited to the faster pace of the indoor courts. Also, strange as it may sound, quite a number of the players have had little to no experience indoors (Alison Ramos of USC, for example, only played her first indoor event this year) so there's an advantage for players from certain regions (colder American states and Europe) as well as those who play an aggressive/attacking and powerful brand of tennis.
Wait until they get outdoors before deciding on who might be deserving of a higher ranking.
Scott, others.......
The blog provided point by point updates on the key matches - all the ones that i was following. On the men's site, all you got was a set (games) score update......and one match i was following there was a 15-20 minute delay......
So don't be so critical of the live scoring......now if we could get some cameras on the courts.....now you're talking!!
Don't you think the UW blog is wasted man power? Couldn't that same energy been spent doing regular scoring updates in a format that is viewer friendly? Also, this isn't anyone's fault because the coaches voted for the format they use in Madison, but they really need to use the format the men do. The women's Team Indoor format is so not fan friendly.
