USC Women Claim Top Recruiting Class; Polansky Named ITF Player of the Month

The Tennis Recruiting Network revealed their Women's Recruiting Class Winter Rankings on Monday, and USC took top honors, with Duke second. USC, which was third in the most recent ITA team rankings, didn't participate in the Women's Team Indoor last weekend (neither did No. 2 Florida), so it will be interesting to see the impact of that (and of Georgia Tech's upset of Stanford) in this week's rankings. My point, I guess, is that the rich get richer, but it's still early in 2007, so by this autumn the recruiting rankings may have changed dramatically.

Bob Larsen's Tennis News posted this item on Peter Polansky being named ITF Men's Circuit player of the month. One of my January aces, Polansky just won his third Futures tournament of 2007 over the weekend in Costa Rica, after qualifying, no less. His record for 2007 stands at 18-1, and he will be playing for Canada's Davis Cup team this coming weekend.

Somdev Devvarman of the University of Virginia was named to India's Davis Cup team and will travel to Uzbekistan for that tie in Group 1, but UVA head coach Brian Boland assures me that he will be returning to the U.S. in time for the Men's Team Indoor in Chicago the following weekend.

Speaking of indoors, I'll be on my way to Midland, Michigan Tuesday to spend some time at the $75K women's Pro Circuit event there. To follow the results, visit dowcorningtennisclassic.com.

Mighty Stanford goes down...good, bout time.

Yeah, I followed the Fla-Baylor match on the internet, horrible singles matches except Jordy Dolberg winning the 2nd set in his match. Jessie Levine, dominating Poereschke, gonna be first freshman since I guess McEnroe to win NCAA singles title.

Yeah he can do it. Florida moved to 7.

Did you see the Georgia line-up...what a stack...putting Isner at 3!!!! I swear they have a cake schedule. If Manny scheduled even close to what Jackson does, they'd never be number 1. Georgia is goin down!!!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Georgia could schedule the top 15 teams and play them twice and still go undefeated for the year.

Isner at 3 is a joke and coaches should complain. That is stacking at it's finest. How can they get away with doing that?

As for Florida, the top 3 is solid. Dolberg is pretty good, but their 5 and 6 are not very good. If they lose the doubles point, they are in trouble in most matches. If they win the doubles point, they can go far in the postseason. Levine made Poerschke look like a kid out there, totally dominated him. Oullette did pretty much the same to Kokta.

Why is it a stack putting Isner at three, Helgeson has a 2-0 record against him, and Flores is just as good. Besides they don't need to stack against William and Mary. Oh and playing the SEC means that even if you play division three schools for non-conference matches you still have a tough schedule, and if you go undefeated you deserve to be number one.

the question is what is levine doing in college. he has all the tools to make it big on the tour and was about to really break thru. its a shame hes giving up on the big time to beat guys 1 and 1 in college. another american bites the dust. at least we have querrey.

Yeah, cause no one who goes to college can ever be any good as a pro. James Blake is a perfect example to disprove that. Levine is probably a 1 and done. I think he went to college to mature as a person before turning pro. Why is that such a bad thing? With as many kids who turn pro at 17 failing miserably, taking a year or 2 to go to college is not any worse than struggling and losing match after match on tour.

Don't ever say anything bad about jesse levine or anything he does...he owns you, he can do whatever he feels is best for him. And I am sure he knows what is best for him not you...he could very easily still make it on the tour. I hope he makes you eat your words.

What tools does he have to "make it big". He is a great player, just coming out of the juniors and Florida will make him a better player to better prepare him for the pro's. He's currently ranked 383, and winning a round here and there. It is hardly "a shame" that he'll be wasting away in Gainesville. I'd wager a lot of money that he and Jackson have an agreement, let's see what happens come summer. If he wins the NCAA and his ranking is in the 200's...bye bye. If not, he'll be a Gator.

I applaud Levine for optimg to go to college, before turning pro. It is an invaluable experience that will stay with him , for the rest of his life. What is the fraction of this kids making it in the pros anyways. At least if pros won't work, he has something to fall back on . Goodluck Jessie !

He's not even gonna be a 1 and done, Jessie is a .5 and done. One semester and he's out. 6 months til we see him play Federer 1st round at the US Open as a wildcard due to his winning the ncaa singles title.

I think the first letter I have to type for this word verification is written in Sandskrit, the dead language. I mean seriously, I wish you all could see this and try to decipher what the heck it is.

Haha, what a shock, it was invalid.
