SMASH Column: USTA Easter Bowl Edition
This week's SMASH column is up, and it's the last word in my 2006 Easter Bowl coverage.
I also wanted to post a link to this editorial about Ryan Sweeting from the Bahama Journal, which I found thanks to my friend and colleague Kamakshi Tandon at Court Coverage.

Ditto this!
Easter Bowl Umpires
The ones who were there were good, there just weren’t enough of them. Every match in every age division from the quarterfinals on should be chaired. It’s a USTA national championship, not a Parks and Rec Open.
Keep up the good work Colette - your informed commentary is appreciated!
As per regulations in the 2006 USTA Junior National Tournament Committee Manual......
Chaired Matches
The following matches are required to be chaired at all USTA National Championships:
Main Draw Singles...
Singles Finals
Singles 3rd/4th Playoff
Singles Semifinals
Singles Quarterfinals
Consolation...
Consolation Finals
Doubles...
Doubles Finals
Doubles 3rd/4th Playoff
Doubles Semifinals
Line and Net Umpires
The singles and doubles finals in USTA National Championships must utilize the services of Line and Net Umpires. The tournament may use discretion in determining whether a Full Crew or a Short Crew (fewer than 10 Line Umpires) will be used.
My comment to any player, parent, or coach who sees any variation from this ruling, is they need to let the USTA Jr. Comp Divison know when these regulations and standards are not being enforced. The quality of each of the four USTA National Championships must be consistently met at all times.
