Jared Pinsky is more than a hometown favorite. He could well win this. He just won the 18s National Open in Pennsylvania, cruising to the final while only losing one set and winning the final easily.
As for Smyczek - like Kryvonos, he has played little or no Junior tennis since Kalamazoo last year. The decision to let "pros" enter Junior tournaments like Clays and Hard Courts was meant to raise the level of play, and it does. These players, however, enter these tournaments with the "carrot" in sight, that is a ride into the Main Draw of the LEgg Mason or in the case of Kalamazoo, into the U.S. Open. When they lose, they often pull out of the Back Draw (as did Briceno, Yoo, and Fugate, from Kalamazoo last year), as there is no more "carrot". Those working their way through the Junior circuit need the points for each round.
