US Girls Sweep J200 Titles in Canada; Tien Makes USC Debut; North Carolina Women Roll Past No. 3 Duke; Two US Wild Cards Advance to Sunrise $15K Semifinals

Maya Joint won the biggest singles title of her ITF Junior Circuit career today in Woodbridge Ontario, with the 16-year-old from Michigan taking the J200 championship with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over unseeded Teah Chavez of Canada. Texas recruit Joint, who beat top seed Thea Rabman 7-5, 6-1 in yesterday's semifinal, avenging a loss to Rabman last summer, didn't drop a set in her five victories. The 17-year-old Chavez, an Ohio State recruit, also reached the final without losing a set, beating the No. 3 and No. 8 seeds. Joint will move up to a new career-high in the ITF junior rankings and has definitely enhanced her chances of playing in the junior slams this summer.

Top seeds Rabman and Anya Murthy took the doubles title, beating the unseeded team of Chavez and Josie Usereau 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

The boys singles title went to qualifier Sasha Rozin of Canada, who won eight matches in seven days to earn his first ITF Junior Circuit singles title. The 17-year-old, who has signed with Arizona for this fall, had not played since the J300 in Canada last August.

Top seeds Cooper Woestendick and Canada's Duncan Chan won the boys doubles title, beating the unseeded team of Daniel Phillips of Bermuda and Santiago Padilla Cote of Mexico 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 in today's final. Woestendick, the reigning Kalamazoo 16s doubles champion, now has five ITF Junior Circuit doubles titles, with five different partners.

2022 Kalamazoo 18s champion Learner Tien played his first match for the University of Southern California Trojans today in Los Angeles, marking an end to the wait, of nearly four months, while the NCAA investigated eligibility issues surrounding his US Open prize money. Against Oregon, Tien played No. 1 doubles, with Bradley Frye, winning that match 6-2; the 17-year-old was on line 2 for singles, against Quinn VandeCasteele, and was leading 6-2, 6-6 when the Trojans clinched the 4-0 win. USC has three more regular season Pac-12 conference matches: Washington tomorrow, UCLA Wednesday and Utah next Sunday before the conference tournament at Ojai, beginning April 26.

The match between No. 1 North Carolina and No. 3 Duke should have provided the most excitement of the day in college tennis, but it proved to be less than gripping, with the Tar Heels cruising to a 4-1 victory. After taking the doubles point, North Carolina won five first sets in singles after the match was moved indoors due to rain. Although Duke briefly tied the score at 1 with Georgia Drummy's win over Abbey Forbes at line 4, straight set victories from Annika Yarlagadda at 6, Reese Brantmeier at 2 and Reilly Tran at 5 gave UNC the win and an undefeated ACC regular season. Now 27-0, the Tar Heels will put their perfect season on the line next week at the ACC conference tournament, where they will be the top seeds.

No. 8 North Carolina State, who was hosting No. 9 Virginia, also had to move indoors, but the Wolfpack picked up a 5-2 win that was 4-0 at clinch. NC State took the doubles point and got straight-sets victories from Diana Shnaider at line 1, Alana Smith at line 2 and Amelia Rajecki at line 3 to clinch the win.

The $15,000 men's USTA Pro Circuit tournament in Sunrise Florida has determined its semifinalists after a grueling day, with two wild cards among those advancing.

2017 NCAA singles champion Thai Kwiatkowski(Virginia), who had to play only one match today, defeated No. 2 seed Sekou  Bangoura(Florida) 6-3, 6-4 and will take on fellow wild card Jaycer Lyeons(Tyler JC), who posted two victories. The 22-year-old Lyeons defeated two 18-year-olds today: Nicholas Godsick 6-0, 7-6(4) in the second round, and Aidan Kim, who retired up 3-6, 7-6(5), 2-1 in the third. No. 3 seed Tristan McCormick(Notre Dame/Georgia) also beat two teenagers to advance, taking out 17-year-old Cooper Williams 7-6(0), 5-7, 6-4 and 18-year-old Kyle Kang, the No. 6 seed, 6-4, 6-2. McCormick will face top seed David Pichler of Austria in the semifinals.

At the women's $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit tournament in Boca Raton, the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, with five Americans still in the hunt for a title: top seed Emma Navarro(Virginia), No. 5 seed Caroline Dolehide, No. 3 seed Katrina Scott, unseeded Hailey Baptiste and No. 8 seed Sachia Vickery. The doubles quarterfinals did not finish before more rain arrived, so the those two remaining quarterfinals and the semifinals in doubles will also be played Saturday.
