Jovic Plays for Third Straight J300 Title Saturday in Colombia; No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Stanford, No. 7 Virginia and No. 8 Vanderbilt Fall in Opening Round of Women's National Team Indoor

Iva Jovic has put together a remarkable run in Central and South America these past three weeks, with one loss total in singles and doubles in the three ITF J300 tournaments in Costa Rica, Ecuador and this week in Colombia. The 15-year-old from Torrance California, seeded No. 1, will play for her third singles title tomorrow, facing No. 2 seed Lucianna Perez Alarcon of Peru in the final. Jovic lost her only set in the past three weeks to Perez Alarcon in the semifinals last week in Ecuador, taking a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 victory.

Jovic defeated No. 5 seed Valeria Ray 6-4, 6-1 in today's semifinals; Perez Alarcon defeated No. 7 seed Isabelle Lacy of Great Britain 6-2, 6-3.

In addition to being the only player to take a set from Jovic, Perez Alarcon is also responsible for Jovic's only loss this year, in the first round of doubles last week in Ecuador. Perez Alarcon and Kaitlin Quevedo, the top seeds, beat Jovic and Tyra Grant in the first round 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 after losing to Jovic and Grant in the quarterfinals 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in the quarterfinals in Costa Rica the week before. Jovic and Grant won the doubles title in Costa Rica and another one today in Colombia, with the No. 4 seeds beating No. 2 seeds Lacy and Hephzibah Oluwadare of Great Britain 6-3, 6-3. They did not come close to dropping a set this week.

Jovic and Grant, who also won the J500 Orange Bowl title in December, are 13-1 as a team since their loss in the first round at the Eddie Herr J300.

The boys final Saturday will feature two unseeded players, which was determined even before today's semifinals, with no seeds making the final four.

Fifteen-year-old Oliver Bonding of Great Britain defeated qualifier Matthias Uwe Kask of Canada 7-6(3), 6-1 to reach his first J300 final. He'll play Mees Rottgering of the Netherlands, also 15 years old, for the title after Rottgering beat 17-year-old Lasse Poertner of Germany 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

The boys doubles champions are top seeds Petr Brunclik and Denis Petak of the Czech Republic, who beat No. 2 seeds Luca Pow and Phoenix Weir 6-4, 6-4 in today's final.

With the ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle this year, I won't be able to provide results for the two late matches, and on this first day of round of 16 competition, that includes the top two seeds. No. 1 Texas plays host Washington and No. 2 North Carolina has a tough opener with Pepperdine. I'll add the box scores tomorrow for those matches. The results are available here.

But even without those results, there was plenty of action from today, with four of the eight seeds sent to the consolation draw today.  Georgia kicked off the day with a 4-2 win over No. 5 Stanford; Oklahoma beat No. 4 Duke 4-2 and Michigan hung on to defeat No. 7 Virginia 4-2.  In the only 4-3 match of first six played Friday, Iowa State, playing in its first Team Indoor ever, took out No. 8 seed Vanderbilt, with the match decided in a third set tiebreaker at line 6.

No. 3 seed Texas A&M and No. 6 seed Ohio State were 4-0 winners earlier in the day.

Cracked Racquets will be providing its CrossCourt coverage throughout the tournament at their YouTube channel.
