Reddy and Lee Meet for Clay Court Boys 12s Title; Kang Beats Top Seed Kumar at Lakewood $15K; New College Doubles Event Planned for Cincinnati Masters; ITA Announces Men's Hall of Fame Inductees

The Boys 12s finals are set at the USTA National Clay Court Championships in Lake Nona Florida, with No. 4 seed Vihaan Reddy playing No. 3 seed Jordan Lee for the title. Reddy, the Winter Nationals champion and Easter Bowl runner-up, defeated top seed Elliott Awomoyi 6-0, 6-0 in today's semifinals, while Lee beat No. 2 seed Safir Azam 6-4, 6-1.

The first 2022 Clay Court champions were crowned today, in B12s doubles, with top seeds Azam and Akshay Mirmira defeating No. 6 seeds Diego Custodio and Daniel Patsula 6-0, 6-1. 

The Girls 12s semifinals are Friday in Boca Raton after these quarterfinal results today.

Seventeen-year-old Kyle Kang advanced to the quarterfinals of the $15,000 SoCal Pro Circuit tournament in Lakewood California today, beating top seed Omni Kumar(Duke) 6-2, 6-3. Kang, who has played all six of the events the past seven weeks, has now matched his best result in that stretch; he reached the semifinals of a Florida $15K in April. He will face fellow junior Ethan Quinn, the No. 5 seed this week, who beat USC All-American Stefan Dostanic 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Kang and Quinn played in quarterfinals of the 2021 Easter Bowl, with Quinn winning that match 6-4, 6-2. Eighteen-year-old qualifier Hudson Rivera defeated Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2 to reach his second quarterfinal in his fifth tournament appearance on the SoCal Pro Circuit. 

In the women's event in Lakewood, Princeton recruit Katherine Hui defeated No. 6 seed Makenna Jones(North Carolina) 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 despite 20 double faults. Four of the eight quarterfinalists are from USC, with Salma Ewing, Snow Han[5], Eryn Cayetano and Madison Sieg[2] all winning today. Cayetano, who won the $15K two weeks ago in Los Angeles, and rising freshman Sieg play tomorrow. 

Meecah Bigun continued his run at the $15,000 men's Pro Circuit event in Pittsburgh, with the 16-year-old defeating rising USC sophomore Ryan Colby 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. He plays unseeded Tyler Zink(Georgia, Oklahoma State) in the quarterfinals.

At the ATP Challenger 80 in Rome Georgia, qualifier Ben Shelton(Florida), Aleks Kovacevic(Illinois), Bjorn Fratangelo[7] and JJ Wolf[2](Ohio State) are through to the quarterfinals, with Shelton and Kovacevic facing off Friday for a spot in the semifinals.

The Western & Southern Open, the ATP & WTA Masters Series event in Cincinnati August 13-21 will feature collegiate doubles competition for the first time. Teams from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Louisville and Xavier will play men's women's and mixed doubles. For more on the event, see this article from wsopen.com.

The ITA announced the 2023 inductees into its men's Tennis Hall of Fame today.  Inducted in the player category are Stanford's Bob and Mike Bryan and UCLA's Mike Franks and Patrick Galbraith. Former USC coach Peter Smith will be enshrined in the coach category, and Brian Hainline has been tapped in the contributor category. For more details, see this article from the ITA.

In other college news, Yale has completed its drive to endow the men's and women's tennis programs, with seven million dollars raised to support the sport in New Haven.

Cornell has named 2021-22 interim women's head coach Katie Zordani to the position permanently.

Auburn has extended the contract of men's head coach Bobby Reynolds through 2025, and Chris Hooshyar has been promoted from assistant to associate head coach.
