All Top Eight Men's Seeds Set to Host D-I Super Regionals; Close Calls but No Upsets in Women's Play Saturday; Brantmeier and Scott Reach Daytona $25K Final; USA Teams Breeze Through North and Central America ITF Team Qualifying

A couple of unseeded men's teams pulled out 4-3 victories on the road Saturday to advance to next weekend's Super Regionals, but all eight of the top seeds earned the right to host those matches as Division I regional activity concluded today.

Stanford took out No. 14 seed Harvard, taking the doubles point and getting wins from Arthur Fery at line 1, Alexandre Rotsaert at line 4 and Max Basing at line 3. After Fery had given Stanford a 3-2 lead, Basing and Brian Shi were early in a third set, as were Timothy Sah and Harvard's Steven Sun at line 6. Sun saved two break points at 5-5 and then broke for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win to make it 3-3. Shi led Basing 5-3 at that stage, and served for the match at 5-4, but was broken at love, and Basing held at 40-30 to take a 6-5 lead. Shi showed signs of leg cramps in the final game, even throwing in a couple of under-handed serves. With that impediment, he could not stay in the points as he had done prior to the final two games, and the match, painful both literally and figuratively, slipped away from Harvard.

Florida State went to Athens and defeated No. 11 seed Georgia, with Sebastian Arcila saving a match point at 4-5 in the third set and going on to defeat Trent Bryde 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 at line 3 to clinch the victory. Georgia was playing without their usual No. 3 Tristan McCormick, who was injured.

Stanford will travel to No. 3 Baylor next week, while Florida State will play No. 6 Tennessee.

The final two regional finals were long ones, with Baylor defeating Texas A&M 4-2, with four of the six singles matches going three sets, including the last three.  Adrian Boitan clinched at line 1 for the Bears.  

North Carolina State, the only unseeded host in the regionals, has only four indoor courts and bad weather today in Raleigh forced the NC State women's first round match indoors, as well as the men's match with No. 16 seed Middle Tennessee State. Scheduled to for a 4 p.m. start originally, that regional final actually began at 5:45 p.m. and after five hours and 20 minutes, NC State emerged as the winner, with Braden Shick clinching  the 4-3 victory with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win over Pavel Motl at line 6.

In the nine women's regional finals, there were no upsets, but a couple of close calls, with No. 2 seed Oklahoma dropping the doubles point to Arizona State, but managing to get the clinch from Layne Sleeth at line 1 for a 4-3 victory.

No. 13 seed Auburn got its fourth point from Yu Chen at line 5, with the senior handling the pressure of being the last match on to earn a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Georgia Tech's Rosie Garcia Gross. 

Stanford's Michaela Gordon, who did not play all season, did not compete in singles in the Cardinal's two victories this weekend, but has gotten two doubles victories with Valencia Xu as her partner. Stanford will travel to Oklahoma for the Super Regional next weekend.

Two 17-year-olds will play for the title Sunday at the $25,000 USTA Women's tournament in Daytona Beach Florida, a first Pro Circuit singles final for both Katrina Scott and Reese Brantmeier. Scott, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 8 seed Francoise Abanda of Canada 6-2, 7-5, and Brantmeier, unseeded, beat Alexa Graham(UNC) 6-2, 6-2. 

In the doubles final, top seeds Yu-Chieh Hsieh and Connie Hsu(Penn) of Taiwan defeated unseeded teenagers Hina Inoue and Switzerland's Chelsea Fontenel 7-5, 6-0.

No. 3 seed Katie Volynets retired from her semifinal match with qualifier Gabriela Lee (Texas Tech) today at the $100,000 tournament in Bonita Springs Florida with the score 2-6, 7-6(5), 1-0. I hope it's precautionary, assuming that she has clinched the USTA's Roland Garros wild card by making the semifinals this week. Lee will face No. 7 Katarzyna Kawa, who beat No. 4 seed Xiyu Wang of China 6-4, 7-6(2).

All four US teams competing at the ITF North and Central America qualifying for the 16U and 14U events this weekend in Mexico finished with perfect records. Not only did the Junior Davis Cup, Junior Billie Jean King Cup, and boys and girls World Junior Tennis teams finish 3-0 to win their groups, they all won all three of their matches by 3-0 scores. They now advance to the 16-team finals, which are in August in the Czech Republic for the 14U teams and in November in Turkey for the 16U teams.
