Inside Junior Tennis Podcast; Florida Ends Seminoles Season; Pepperdine's Reign Over

In just a few days, it's going to be all NCAA all the time here at zootennis. I'll be in Athens from team start to individual finish May 17-May 28, and so am paying very close attention to this weekend's regional play.

In this week's Inside Junior Tennis podcast, ITA Director of Communications Casey Angle joins us to talk about the upcoming NCAAs, why Athens is a special place in college tennis, and what's going on in the other NCAA championships--DII, DIII, etc.

The University of Florida Gators are back in the Sweet 16, defeating Florida State 4-3 today in Tallahassee. An anonymous commenter was at the match, and thinks the Gators have a chance against Georgia if they can win the doubles point, but I don't see the Bulldogs having any sort of letdown when they take the court in front of their home crowd next Thursday night, especially against a conference rival. I do agree that the Isner - Levine match at No. 1 will be worth the price of admission. Here's the details of todays's win over the Seminoles from the Gatorzone.

Last year USC didn't even make the NCAAs, this year they dumped the defending champion Pepperdine Waves 4-0 to make the final 16. The USC website has the details.

Duke lost to Alabama (4-3) at home, and North Carolina, the No. 6 seed, was shutout on its home courts by NC State. If Wake Forest doesn't come back (they are tied 3-3 with Clemson and the final match, at No. 3 singles, is in the third), it will have been a pretty dismal day on Tobacco Road.

Wake Forest won an epic match with Clemson, Hamar clinching it with an 11-9 win in the 3rd set tiebreaker. So, the men's field is set, with 13 of 16 seeds moving on. Hard to see anyone beating UGA at home this year. I think they are on a mission. Levine-Isner will be a great match to watch, but it's not likely to end with a decision.

Man that Wake-Clemson match was great. I followed it after the 4hr rain delay with Wake serving down 2-4. He held, broke and held and then had 30-30, then went to a breaker.

Wake led 4-2, lost 4 of next 5pts to give Clemson match point at 6-5 with Hamar for Wake serving to stay in it. He then had match pts at 7-6, 8-7 on his own serve, 9-8 and finally on his own serve at 10-9 when he finally clinched it. Whoever was doing the internet updating did a great job. Literally updated it every point. Made watching a computer screen about as exciting as it could be. Must have been an electric atmosphere post rain delay.

UNC, what happened? I didnt really follow that match, but man they got creamed. NCST in the Sweet 16, now thats a new thing in college tennis.

Bama-Duke seemed like it was extremely close, Duke definitely got back into the match after the rain delay. Glad to see the Tide back in Athens. Just think, they could have Luigi D'Agord at #1 and Eric Molnar in the lineup if they hadn't transferred.

A little off the subject but i haven't seen anything on the recent I.T.F.'s here in the U.S. and we seemed to have followed the ones in Central and South America. Any word on how they've gone and how the U.S.T.A. kids have done in them.
