USTA Easter Bowl 12s Videos; Five Americans Reach Semifinals at J200 in Canada; Urhobo Through to W35 Boca Raton Quarterfinals; Nava Extends Win Streak to 12 at Sarasota Challenger
I've processed the first of last month's USTA Level 1 Easter Bowl videos, with the boys and girls 12s finals below. These finals were played the day after dangerous air quality canceled play and you can see the dust on the courts when a ball lands.
There are two ITF J200s this week that have drawn a substantial number of Americans, one in Canada on indoor hard and one in France, on outdoor clay. Although there were three US boys and 8 US girls in the 32-player draws in Istres France, the only one to advance as far as the quarterfinals was No. 8 seed Gavin Goode.
The results are much better in Woodbridge Ontario, with three US boys and two US girls reaching the semifinals.
Top seed Maximus Dussault lost in the quarterfinals today to unseeded Dani Szabo 7-5, 1-6, 6-0, with the Canadian Szabo, the only non-US boy in the quarterfinals, now set to face No. 4 seed Matisse Farzam, a 7-6(3), 7-5 winner over unseeded Mark Krupkin. Fifteen-year-old Michael Antonius, the No. 7 seed, beat No. 3 seed Lachlan Gaskell 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 and will play No. 2 seed Ronit Karki, who beat No. 6 seed Simon Caldwell 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.
In the girls semifinals, unseeded Thara Gowda will play No. 1 seed Nadia Lagaev of Canada and No. 4 seed Aspen Schuman will face unseeded Isabella Marton of Canada. Gowda defeated unseeded Clemence Mercier of Canada 6-0, 6-1 and Lagaev beat unseeded Maggie Sohns 6-1, 6-1. Schuman downed No. 7 seed Hanne Estrada of Mexico 6-1, 6-2 and Marton defeated unseeded Karlin Schock 6-3, 6-1.
Most of the teenagers have been eliminated at the women's USTA Pro Circuit W35 in Boca Raton Florida, with the exception of 18-year-old Akasha Urhobo. Urhobo, a finalist at this tournament last year, defeated former NC State All-American Alana Smith 6-2, 6-4 and will play unseeded Diletta Cherubini of Italy in Friday's quarterfinals.
2015 NCAA singles champion Jamie Loeb(UNC), a qualifier, beat No. 4 seed Maria Mateas(Duke) 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and will play Maria Portillo Ramirez of Mexico, who beat No. 7 seed Anna Rogers(NC State) 6-4, 6-2 after Portillo Ramirez had gotten past qualifier Fiona Crawley(UNC) 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) late last night in the first round. Loeb is not the only qualifier to advance to the quarterfinals, with Jada Robinson making to the final eight when Canadian Katherine Sebov retired from their match down 6-2, 1-0.
The only quarterfinal expected by the seeding will have No. 2 Whitney Osuigwe taking on No. 6 Mei Yamaguchi of Japan. Osuigwe beat 18-year-old qualifier Mayu Crossley of Japan 6-2, 6-4, while Yamaguchi beat 18-year-old wild card Christasha McNeil 6-1, 6-2.
Due to the rain Tuesday, the doubles schedule has not recovered, with both the quarterfinals and semifinals set to take place Friday.
Only one of the four Americans competing today at the ATP Challenger 75 in Sarasota Florida advanced to Friday's quarterfinals: No. 5 seed Emilio Nava. Nava, who won two ATP Challengers in South America in March, took last week off, but now has extended his Challenger winning streak to 12 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over qualifier Adrian Boitan(Baylor) of Romania today. The 23-year-old will play No. 4 seed Tomas Barrios Vera of Chile, who beat Michael Mmoh 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Qualifier Patrick Maloney(Michigan) lost to No. 7 seed Liam Draxl(Kentucky) of Canada 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 and Andres Andrade(Florida) of Ecuador defeated No. 3 seed Mitchell Krueger 7-5, 6-4.
Nava and top seed Eliot Spizzirri(Texas) will meet in Saturday's semifinals if they both win Friday.
At the ATP Challenger 125 in Mexico City, qualifier Alfredo Perez(Florida) is through to his first Challenger quarterfinal at age 27; he'll play No. 4 seed Felipe Meligeni Alves of Brazil Friday.
