Farzam Wins ITF J200 in Canada; Urhobo Claims W35 Boca Raton Doubles Title, Reaches Singles Final; Nava Extends Challenger Winning Streak in Sarasota; No. 1 Wake Forest Beats No. 5 NC State to Claim ACC Title
I'll have my usual update of ITF Junior Circuits results of Americans on Monday, but because there were so many players from the United States competing for titles this week at the J200 in Woodbridge Ontario, I'm providing those results in tonight's post. Three of the four titles went to Americans, with Matisse Farzam winning his second ITF Junior Circuit singles title. The Ohio State signee, seeded No. 4, defeated No. 2 seed Ronit Karki 6-3, 6-1 in the all-US final. Although unlikely to be enough to get him into the Roland Garros junior main draw, the 200 points Farzam earned with the title should assure him a place in qualifying. The entry deadline for the Roland Garros Junior Championships is April 29.
Top seed Nadia Lagaev of Canada took the girls singles title, beating No. 4 seed Aspen Schuman 6-3, 7-6(1). Lagaev, 17, who was defending last year's title in Woodbridge, didn't drop a set throughout the week.
No. 3 seeds Volodymyr Gurenko of Canada and Yubel Ubri won the boys doubles title, beating No. 2 seeds Simon Caldwell and Maximus Dussault 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 in the final.
Unseeded Kaya Moe and Sara Shumate won the girls doubles title, beating No. 4 seeds Abril Cardenas Olivares and Hanne Estrada of Mexico 1-6, 6-2, 11-9 in the final.
Eighteen-year-old Akasha Urhobo is through to the final of the women's USTA Pro Circuit W35 in Boca Raton for the second year in a row after the unseeded Floridian beat No. 3 seed Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus 6-0, 3-1 ret. Urhobo will play No. 2 seed Whitney Osuigwe, who defeated qualifier Jamie Loeb(UNC) 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Urhobo won her first Pro Circuit doubles title today, with Rasheeda McAdoo(Georgia Tech), who has 11 Pro Circuit doubles titles. Urhobo and McAdoo, the No. 4 seeds, defeated No. 3 seeds Tori Osuigwe and Alana Smith(NC State) 5-7, 7-6(2), 10-7 in the all-USA final.
Emilio Nava has extended his ATP Challenger winning streak to 14 after the No. 5 seed defeated top seed Eliot Spizzirri(Texas) 7-6(6), 6-4 in today's semifinals in Sarasota Florida. The 23-year-old Californian now has won 22 sets in a row, with that record still intact after saving a set point in the tiebreaker serving at 5-6. He saved it with a first serve and went on to convert the only break point faced by either player in the second set with Spizzirri serving at 2-3.
Nava lost only three points on serve in the second set, and in what should be a difficult game, serving for the match at 5-4, he dominated, making first serves and hitting winners to convert his first match point.
Nava will face No. 7 seed Liam Draxl(Kentucky) of Canada, who defeated No. 2 seed Federico Agustin Gomez(Louisville) of Argentina 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first semifinal of the day. Draxl, who has one Challenger title, will be playing in his fifth final Sunday. Nava is playing for his third straight title after winning back-to-back 75s in South American last month.
Top seeds Robert Cash and JJ Tracy won the doubles title, their fifth on the ATP Challenger Tour since claiming the NCAA doubles title last May for Ohio State. Cash and Tracy defeated unseeded Gomez and Luis David Martinez of Venezuela 6-4, 7-6(3) in today's final.
The marquee match today in Division I college tennis featured the No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 5 NC State men playing in Raleigh. A large crowd came out to cheer on the Wolfpack, but they were unable to pull off the upset, with the Demon Deacons claiming a 4-2 victory to remain undefeated. It also secured Wake Forest the regular season ACC championship.
Wake Forest tried a couple of new double pairings and they worked out well, taking the doubles point. They also had graduate student Stefan Dostanic competing for just the second time since he clinched the Team Indoor title for them in mid-February. After Luca Pow made it 2-0 with a win at line 5, NC State got on the board with a win by Martin Borisiouk at line 2. Dostanic made it 3-1 Wake with a victory at line 1, but NC State got another point from Luca Staeheli at line 3. But freshman Charlie Robertson closed out the win, beating Fons Van Sambeek 6-4, 6-4 at line 4. All of the matches were decided in straight sets, with the unfinished match at line 6 in a second set tiebreaker.
