Undefeated North Carolina Women Remain Unanimous No. 1, but Poll and ITA Computer Disagree on Men's Top Team; Princeton's Frayman and Florida's Shelton Remain No. 1 in Singles; Ohio State and UNC Retain Top Spots in Doubles

During my two weeks in Southern California, I wasn't able to keep current on college tennis, let alone write about it, with junior tennis my big focus during that stretch. (I did talk to many college coaches, who were back on the recruiting trail at those Socal events after a two-year hiatus). But now that I'm back home and the college tennis season is heading toward the postseason, I'm doing all I can to get back up to speed on the Division I results and big matches coming in the next several weeks.

The latest rankings, released today, are at the stage when those participating in the USTA/Tennis Channel Top 25 poll are beginning to lock in their perceptions of the top teams, which means not a lot of movement from week to week. The ITA computer algorithm however, is more volatile, and this week, the divergence is notable in the men's rankings.  TCU, with a boost from their 4-3 road win over Baylor, who had beaten them 5-2 in Fort Worth the previous week, is back at No. 1 in the ITA rankings, while the USTA voters have them fourth and Florida at No. 1. It is worth noting however, that both the computer and the voters have the same ten teams in the Top 10, with just disagreement over the order.

With the North Carolina women remaining undefeated, due to a gritty 4-3 win on the road Sunday over then No. 2 North Carolina State, they are No. 1 in both sets of rankings. But unlike the men, the voters and the computer do differ in which teams should be in the Top 10. The voters like Georgia and Virginia, while the computer prefers Miami and Cal.
