Quan Beats Top Seed Filin, Advances to Las Vegas J4 Semifinals; Michelsen, Damm and Quinn Reach Quarters at Bakersfield $25K; Wolf, Kudla Make Phoenix Challenger Quarterfinals

The semifinals are set for the ITF J4 in Las Vegas, and there are only four seeds left, two boys and two girls, none of whom is in the top 4.

Unseeded Rudy Quan, playing in his first tournament since December's Orange Bowl, defeated top seed Nikita Filin 6-1, 6-1 to reach the semifinals in his third ITF Junior Circuit event. The 2021 Eddie Herr 16s champion will face Princeton recruit Fnu Nidunjianzan of China, the No. 7 seed, who beat unseeded Russell Lokko 6-0, 7-6(0) in today's quarterfinals. In the bottom half, No. 11 seed Cooper Woestendick, the 2021 Easter Bowl 14s champion, defeated unseeded Calvin Baierl 6-1, 6-2 to reach the semifinals of all three ITF Junior Circuit tournaments he has played this year. Woestendick reached the final of the J5 in Wisconsin this winter and won the J5 in New Jersey the following week. Woestendick will play unseeded Garren Spicka, who beat No. 4 seed Adhithya Ganesan 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. 

Junior Orange Bowl 14s champion Iva Jovic, the No. 10 seed, recovered from losing the first set 6-0 to beat qualifier Krisha Mahendran, who had taken out top seed Ela Platenikova of Slovakia in the third round, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2. Jovic, a 14-year-old Californian, has reached the final in two of the three ITF Junior Circuit tournaments she has played, and will attempt to make that three out of four when she meets No. 11 seed Reya Coe Friday. Coe, who has verbally committed to NC State, defeated wild card Julieta Pareja, the 2021 USTA 12s National champion, 6-3, 6-4.

The bottom half semifinal features two 14-year-old wild cards from California: Alexis Nguyen and Tianmei Wang. Nguyen defeated reigning USTA Winter Nationals 18s champion Piper Charney 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Wang took out No. 6 seed Salma Farhat 6-3, 6-3. Both Nguyen and Wang are playing in their first ITF Junior Circuit tournament.

Three of the four teenagers in action in today's second round at the $25,000 USTA men's Pro Circuit tournament in Bakersfield have advanced to Friday's quarterfinals.  Seventeen-year-old wild card Alex Michelsen had the easiest time, beating No. 5 seed JC Aragone(Virginia) 6-1, 6-0 in 58 minutes. The University of Georgia recruit will face No. 3 seed Rinky Hijikata(North Carolina) of Australia, who beat qualifier Alexander Cozbinov(UNLV) of Moldova 6-3, 6-3.  

Eighteen-year-old Ethan Quinn, a redshirt freshman at Georgia, defeated No. 8 seed Jonathan Mridha of Sweden 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, hitting nine aces in his second victory on the Pro Circuit. Quinn will play No. 2 seed and former Baylor All-American Julian Lenz of Germany, who defeated qualifier Isaiah Strode 7-5, 6-3. 

Eighteen-year-old wild card Martin Damm beat France's Jaimee Floyd Angele 7-5, 6-4 and will face Keegan Smith(UCLA) in Friday's quarterfinals. Smith defeated Shintaro Imai of Japan 7-6(5), 6-4.

Wild card Bruno Kuzuhara lost to No. 6 seed Adrian Andreev of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-1.

At the ATP 125 Challenger in Phoenix, JJ Wolf(Ohio State) got one of the best wins of his professional career, defeating No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 6-3, 6-2. Wolf has victories over ATP No. 21 Lorenzo Sonego of Italy and No. 36 Guido Pella, for his two Top 40 wins. Musetti is currently 56 in the ATP rankings. Fernando Verdasco of Spain is Wolf's next opponent. 

Denis Kudla also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating lucky loser Mats Moraing of Germany 7-6(2), 7-6(5). He too will play a veteran ATP star in Richard Gasquet of France. 

Christopher Eubanks faces No. 8 seed David Goffin of Belgium in the second round later tonight.
