I know that there were a lot of comments regarding this practice related to Kalamazoo; I don't like the message it sends when players tank the back draw.

Maybe there are some circumstances that I'm not aware of but I saw that the first seed of the B18s Winter Nationals -- Mitch Stuart -- was upset by the 17th seed in the round of 16 and then defaulted the back draw claiming "injury." But how injured could he be if he played on in his doubles match (and won easily) the same day and then advanced all the way to the finals of doubles?

As long as the back draw points are a small fraction of the main draw points you are going to see this type of behavior.

How injured? I certainly don't know, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with the practice of pulling out of the back draw if you're injured enough that going all out in singles would aggravate the injury. You continue to compete in doubles because it's not as physically demanding, because you're still fighting for a championship, and because you're not letting down a teammate.

BTW, Brayden Schnur, for those interested, is at UNC according to his twitter feed.

I took a quick look at Stewart’s record and I see a recent pattern that seems to indicate that he is not responding well when he gets upset by a lower ranked player. His previous tournament was a National Open where he was upset in the semis, but then he defaulted the third place playoff claiming “injury.” When he lost his match in another recent tournament at Nappa Valley, he defaulted the next match claiming “injury.” After he got upset in his sectionals in July he did not play in another junior tournament until the November 29 National Open mentioned above. No one likes to lose to lower ranked players but it happens to everyone -- even the pros -- so I recommend that he get used to it and learn how to respond. This must be a recent thing because I don’t recall that Stewart showed this pattern earlier in his junior career.

My daughter played in the 18's, and the problem seems to be with the kids coming from the East Coast. Have any of them ever heard of a flu shot?
Sneezing and coughing all over the place.

Tennis Mom- With all due respect I'm not sure what is the relevance of your comment. Stewart is from the West Coast and is claiming "injury" not illness in several recent tournaments.
