Jovic Reaches ITF J300 Finals in Roehampton; Four Americans Through to Final Round of Wimbledon Junior Qualifying, Junior Slam Champions Bigun and Jamrichova Top Seeds; Five More Americans Reach Wimbledon Third Round

Iva Jovic avenged her loss to Laura Samson in the Roland Garros quarterfinals in today's semifinal action at the ITF J300 in Roehampton. Jovic, the No. 5 seed, beat top seed Samson 6-3, 6-3, her fifth straight-sets win of the week. The 16-year-old from Southern California will face No. 14 seed Teodora Kostovic of Serbia, who beat No. 2 seed Emerson Jones of Australia 6-4, 6-3. Kostovic won their previous meeting on the Har-Tru last fall in the semifinals of the Eddie Herr J300.

Jovic has also has reached the doubles final, with longtime friend and partner Tyra Grant. The No. 2 seeds will play the unseeded team of Julie Pastikova of the Czech Republic and Julia Stusek of Germany in Friday's final.

The boys final will feature two unseeded players in University of Virginia rising freshman Rafael Jodar of Spain and Charlie Robertson of Great Britain. Jodar ended the run of 15-year-old Mark Ceban of Great Britain 6-3, 6-4; Robertson defeated No. 7 seed Maxim Mrva of the Czech Republic 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

Jagger Leach and Kaylan Bigun will compete in the boys doubles final, with the No. 2 seeds facing top seeds Petr Brunclik of the Czech Republic and Jangjun Kim of Korea.  Leach and Bigun defeated unseeded Henry Bernet and Flynn Thomas of Switzerland 6-4, 7-6(1).

Results of the Wimbledon Junior Championships' first round of qualifying, also taking place at Roehampton today are below, with four Americans through to Friday's final round of qualifying.

Again, I'll express my disappointment with Wimbledon regarding the use of a match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, which is not the format employed in the Australian Open or Roland Garros Junior Championship qualifying; they both play out the final set. The US Open and Wimbledon use the match tiebreaker instead, and today No. 2 boys seed Noah Johnston and No. 1 seeds Victoria Barros of Brazil and Oskari Paldanius of Finland

felt the sting of that abbreviated set. Barros, 14, lost to NC State incoming freshman Mia Slama, one of the last players to make it into qualifying, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
