Duke Joins Pepperdine, Vanderbilt and North Carolina in Women's D-1 Team Indoor Semifinals; ITF Junior Titles for Grishuk, Broadus and Chaphalkar; USA Takes 2-0 Lead in Fed Cup

I'm in Florida for the next several days, and I'll be covering the USTA Level 2 18s event at Lake Nona Sunday and Monday, with a complete recap for the Tennis Recruiting Network scheduled for late next week.
In the meantime, I'll try to keep up with what's going on elsewhere, including Madison, Wisconsin, where the ITA Women's Division I Team Indoor Championships are winding down.

After all eight seeds advanced to today's quarterfinals, just one higher seed lost, with No. 2 Georgia going out to No. 7 Duke 4-3, with freshman Kelly Chen clinching for the Blue Devils at line 3.

Duke will face North Carolina, a 4-1 winner over Texas Tech, and top seed Vanderbilt will play No. 4 seed Pepperdine.  Vanderbilt blanked Florida, still playing without Brooke Austin, 4-0 and Pepperdine got past Georgia Tech 4-2.

Three US girls collected ITF Junior Circuit titles this week, in New Zealand, Nepal and Mexico.

Fifteen-year-old Skyler Grishuk won the Grade 3 in New Zealand, her second career ITF singles title, with her first, a Grade 4 last year, also coming in New Zealand.  Grishuk, the No. 3 seed, defeated top seed Valentina Ivanov of New Zealand 7-6(3), 6-3 in the final.

Thirteen-year-old Rutuja Chaphalkar, playing in her first ITF tournament at a Grade 5 in Nepal, took the title with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1) win over No. 7 seed Yiming Dang of China. Chaphalkar was of course unseeded, although she only needed to win one match to qualify for the event.

In Mexico, 15-year-old Savannah Broadus won the Grade 4, beating 14-year-old Elaine Chervinsky in an all-American final 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.  It's the third ITF singles title for Broadus, who won a Grade 4 and a Grade 5 in the United States last fall. Chervinsky did collect a title, winning the doubles with Madison Sieg.  The unseeded team beat No. 6 seeds Iulia Ilinca of Romania and Aleksa Marquez of Peru 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

The US women began their defense of the Fed Cup today in Asheville North Carolina against the Netherlands.  Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe won their two singles matches over Arantxa Rus and Richel Hogenkamp for a 2-0 lead, with just one point needed from the two singles matches on Sunday.

Fed Cup vs. Davis Cup said...

During Fed Cup Week and in today's hyper-sensitive Political climate, Why does Fed Cup Captain, Kathy Rinaldi make LESS than Davis Cup captain, Jim Courier for the captain roles?

Kathy has just won a Fed Cup title and Jim has underachieved. Kathy should be making MORE than Jim.

Look in the stands - nobody cares a rat's ass about Fed Cup.

Fed Cup tickets were expensive. I looked into buying some a week ahead of time and the cheapest I saw online were about $500. You had to buy for both days. I passed on that amount.

The Fed Cup was sold out and they are World Champs. They have the best roster and their players love playing for Captain Kathy.
