Another Rainout at Edmond W100; Penickova and Gowda Reach W35, W50 Quarterfinals; Qualifiers Outnumber Seeds in Austin M25 Quarterfinals; Last Eleven D-I Regionals Underway; Brateanu Out at Utah

A second straight day of rain has disrupted the USTA Pro Circuit W100 in Edmond Oklahoma, with just four first round matches completed so far. Here's Friday's schedule; it's not pretty.

The quarterfinals are set at the W35 in Redding California, with Annika Penickova, the No. 8 seed, the sole teenager still in contention. Penickova defeated Jenna DeFalco 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 and will face Pepperdine junior Duru Soke of Turkey Friday. Soke, who is obviously not playing the Southwest regional, beat No. 3 seed Francesca Pace of Italy 6-3, 7-6(1) today. Former Stanford All American Connie Ma continues her comeback, advancing to a quarterfinal meeting with former Wisconsin All-American Maria Sholokhova of Russia by beating Jo-Yee Chan(Oregon, San Diego State) 6-1, 6-2. Sholokhova defeated No. 7 seed Lan Mi(Cal) of China 6-2, 6-0.

At the W50 in Quebec, 2025 NCAA champion Reese Brantmeier and 17-year-old Thara Gowda have advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will play each other.

The unseeded Brantmeier beat No. 7 seed Hiromi Abe of Japan 6-4, 7-6(0), while Gowda took out fellow qualifier Francoise Abanda of Canada 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Abanda had beaten top seed Katherine Sebov of Canada 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round last night. No. 8 seed Ayana Akli(Maryland, South Carolina) is the third American through to to quarterfinals, beating Hina Inoue 6-4, 6-2 today.

Duke freshman Mimi Xu of Great Britain beat No. 3 seed Cadence Brace 6-4, 6-0 to reach Friday's quarterfinals, where she will play unseeded Yuki Naito of Japan.

At the M25 in Austin, Wake Forest sophomore Dominick Mosejczuk will face his third straight qualifier in the quarterfinals, as all the upsets in the first round have left only British TCU alums as seeds in the draw: No. 1 Alastair Gray and No. 8 Lui Maxted.

Mosejczuk, who has now won nine straight USTA Pro Circuit matches this fall, including this week's qualifying, defeated qualifier Zsombor Velcz(Baylor) of Hungary 6-1, 6-3 today. He will play Auburn sophomore Iker Urribarrens of Spain, a qualifier who beat No. 3 seed Luciano Ambrogi(Oklahoma) of Argentina 6-2, 7-6(5) in the first round and Karl Poling(Princeton, UNC) 6-3, 6-1 today. Junior exempt entry Benjamin Willwerth, the 2025 Australian Open boys finalist, defeated finished up his 6-3, 7-6(6) first round win over No. 5 seed Tyler Zink(Georgia, Oklahoma State) this morning and beat qualifier Micah Braswell(Texas) 6-4, 6-2 in the afternoon.

Andrew Fenty(Michigan) and Sebastian Gorzny(TCU, Texas) are the other two Americans in the quarterfinals.

Rain has also been a problem at the M15 in Lexington Kentucky, but four Americans are through to the quarterfinals: No. 8 seed Jack Anthrop(Ohio State), Kentucky senior Eli Stephenson, a qualifier, Noah Zamora(UC Irvine) and Felix Corwin(Minnesota).

The last 11 ITA Division I regionals are underway, with 22 more players qualifying for NCAA singles and 11 more team qualifying for the NCAA doubles championships. All the results from last week's 15 regionals can be found in my Monday post.

The five men's regionals this week are in the Midwest at Ohio State, the Northeast at Penn, the Northwest at Washington, the Southeast at Georgia Tech and the Southwest at Pepperdine.

The top seeds, respectively, are Max Dahlin of Michigan, Simeon Stankovic of Princeton(no Paul Inchauspe), Hudson Rivera of Stanford,(no Alex Razeghi), Henry Jefferson of Florida, who is already out in the first round, and Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA(no Spencer Johnson).

The six women's regionals this week are the Atlantic at Liberty, Carolina at South Carolina, Central at Memphis, Mountain at BYU, Northeast at Princeton and Southwest at San Diego and San Diego State.

The Atlantic draws aren't out yet, but the top seeds, respectively, are Tatum Evans of North Carolina, Kyoka Kubo of Kansas(no Evialina Laskevich of Oklahoma), Sara Akid of Utah, Margot Phanthala of Columbia and Emilija Tverijonaite of Arizona State(no Mayu Crossley of UCLA).

Links to the draws for all 11 regionals can be found at the ITA tournament page. Chris Halioris has added a new page at his website collegetennisranks.com with the NCAA qualifiers and will be updating it as these regionals conclude, with the latest finish date Tuesday October 20th.

A change at the top of men's tennis was announced today by Utah's athletic director Mark Harlan, with Roeland Brateanu out after 12 years as the head coach. A former player and assistant coach at Utah prior to taking the head coaching position, Brateanu has a 21-year history with the program. Associate head coach Sten van Beurden will take over as interim head coach of the Utes.
