Nine Americans Reach Second Week of Australian Open; Heat Postpones AO Junior Matches; Kapanadze Wins Bolton U14 Title; Urhobo Beats Andreescu to Reach M35 Weston Final; Preston Advances to J300 Coffee Bowl Final

Five US women and four US men have reached the second week of the Australian Open with five advancing Saturday.


Upsets have been few at this year's tournament, and all of the Americans who have advanced are seeded, although Iva Jovic, Tommy Paul and Learner Tien are not among the Top 16 seeds.

With the heat exceeding the allowable level in mid-afternoon, many of the junior matches scheduled were postponed, including three matches of US boys. The three matches that were played resulted in losses for the American juniors.

The Les Petits As 14U tournament begins Monday, with many of the American participants warming up for the event, as usual, at the Tennis Europe category 1 event in Bolton England. 

Three American girls, two of them unseeded, made the semifinals, and in the all-USA final, unseeded Anna Kapanadze defeated No. 8 seed Isha Manchala  7-5, 1-6, 6-4 to claim the title. Kapanadze had beaten Capri Butera 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.

The only US boy to advance to the quarterfinals was unseeded David Bender, who did beat the No. 2 seed in the second round. No. 3 seed Lyoma Hotelier of Japan won the boys title, beating No. 12 seed Federick Fabricius of Great Britain 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-2.

At the W35 in Weston Florida, unseeded Akasha Urhobo beat No. 2 seed and last week's W35 Bradenton champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the final. She'll play another former WTA top 35 player in Madison Brengle, who is unseeded after a long injury layoff in 2024 and the first half of last year. Brengle defeated Kajsa Rinaldo Persson of Sweden 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in today's semifinals.

No. 4 seeds Yiming Dang and Xiaodi You of China won the doubles title, beating Americans Hanna Chang and Victoria Hu(Princeton), the No. 3 seeds, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in today's final.

Fifteen-year-old Janae Preston will play for her first ITF J300 title tonight at the Coffee Bowl in Costa Rica, with the No. 4 seed facing No. 7 seed Klara Blazkova of the Czech Republic. Preston beat qualifier Hannah Ayrault 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals, while Blazkova prevented an all-USA girls final with a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 2 seed Maggie Sohns.

In the boys singles final, wild card Felix Roussel of Canada will face No. 4 seed Mathys Domenc of France.

Both of today's doubles finals featured two teams from the United States. Top seeds Welles Newman and Jordyn Hazelitt beat unseeded Thara Gowda and Kaya Moe 6-4, 6-2 in the girls final. Safir Azam and Marcel Latak won the battle of unseeded teams with a 7-6(5), 6-3 decision over William McEwan and Mason Vaughan.
