Top Seeds Ousted in ITF J200 Corpus Christi Quarterfinals; Pareja Defeats Urhobo, Faces Jones Next at W50 in Rancho Santa Fe; Seniors Zheng and Banerjee Advance to Quarterfinals at Tiburon Challenger

The semifinals feature nothing but Americans at this week's ITF J200 in Corpus Christi Texas, but neither of the No. 1 seeds were able to survive their quarterfinal tests.

No. 7 seed Lani Chang, the daughter of Hall of Famer Michael Chang, breezed past top seed Kori Montoya 6-1, 6-1 today; the 14-year-old has had lots of success on the ITF J100 level, but did not have a win above that level until this week. Chang will play No. 4 seed Maggie Sohns, who put an end to the eight-match winning streak of 14-year-old Carol Shao, who won the J60 last week in Kerrville, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

The other girls semifinal Friday features No. 5 seed Karlin Schock and No. 8 seed Jordyn Hazelitt. Schock defeated qualifier Alanna Ingalsbe 6-3, 6-1, while Hazelitt beat unseeded Reiley Rhodes 6-4, 6-3.

Like Chang No. 8 seed Tanishk Konduri also rolled through his quarterfinal, beating top seed Ryan Cozad 6-3, 6-1. Konduri will face No. 4 seed Roshan Santhosh, who defeated No. 12 seed Mason Taube 6-3, 7-6(4).

The blockbuster semifinal in the bottom half will have No. 3 seed Andrew Johnson taking on Junior Davis Cup teammate and doubles partner Michael Antonius, the No. 2 seed. Johnson defeated the only unseeded player in the boys quarterfinals, Safir Azam, 6-4, 7-5, with Antonius getting past No. 9 seed Vihaan Reddy by the same score.

In Friday's boys doubles final, Antonius and Johnson, the top seeds, will play Cozad and Shaan Majeed, the No. 4 seeds; in the girls doubles final, No. 5 seeds Isabelle DeLuccia and Kayla Moore face unseeded Carlota Moreno and Lillian Santos.

At the USTA Pro Circuit W50 in Rancho Santa Fe California, Julieta Pareja defeated Akasha Urhobo 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Urhobo and Pareja were the top two seeds at the USTA 18s Nationals in San Diego in August, but neither advanced to the final. Next up for Pareja, currently No. 1 in the ITF junior rankings, is former ITF junior No. 1 Emerson Jones of Australia, the No. 3 seed this week. Jones defeated former USC All-American Eryn Cayetano 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. Jones and Pareja met in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros juniors in June, with Jones posting a 7-5, 6-4 win.

Emina Bektas(Michigan) defeated top seed Louisa Chirico 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 and will play qualifier Katrina Scott in the quarterfinals. Scott beat No. 5 seed Anastasia Gasanova of Russia 6-4, 6-4.

The fourth American in the quarterfinals is Elli Mandlik, who beat No. 7 seed Elvina Kalieva 6-1, 6-3. Mandlik's opponent in the quarterfinals is No. 2 seed Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus, who defeated Fiona Crawley(North Carolina) 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

In Northern California, at the W35 in San Rafael, qualifier Madison Brengle defeated last week's Templeton W75 champion Kayla Day, the No. 4 seed, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2. Brengle, now 35, is coming back after almost two years out of the game, was at 57 in the WTA rankings at the end of 2022.

Former USC All-American Madison Sieg defeated No. 2 seed Alicia Herrero Linana(Baylor) of Spain 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals, where she'll play Texas A&M junior Lucciana Perez of Peru, who beat Texas freshman and wild card Christasha McNeil 6-2, 6-3 today. Top seed Lea Ma(Georgia), a 7-5, 6-2 winner over qualifier and former Old Dominion All-American Sofia Johnson of Great Britain, is the third American in the quarterfinals.

Two Wake Forest teammates have advanced to the quarterfinals at the M15 in Winston-Salem, but they won't meet this week unless both reach the final.

No. 2 seed and Wake Forest senior DK Suresh of India defeated Nathan Ponwith(Georgia, Arizona State) 6-3, 6-2; unseeded Wake Forest junior Luca Pow of Great Britain beat Braden Shick(NC State) 7-5, 7-5. He will face wild card Samir Banerjee, the Stanford senior, who beat No. 4 seed and ATP 195 Benjamin Hassan of Lebanon 6-1, 7-5. That is the best win by ATP ranking for Banerjee, who had not recorded an ATP Top 300 win before today; he is now 16-4 on the USTA Pro Circuit since completing his junior year at Stanford in June.

The third active collegian in the quarterfinals is University of Virginia sophomore Rafael Jodar of Spain, who beat No. 3 seed Jack Pinnington Jones(TCU) of Great Britain 6-2, 6-3.
