January Aces; TCU Takes Over No. 1 in Men's Latest Coaches Poll; NCAA Champions Zheng and Vidmanova Retain Top Spots in D-I Singles Rankings, San Diego's Tarvet Moves Up

My Aces column for January focuses, as usual, on the Australian Open, but there is also space for a WTA title and three Challenger titles, ITF men's and women's titles at the $25K level for former collegians, Les Petits As champions and three first J300 titles for American juniors. Check out all 19 highlights from a very busy January at the Tennis Recruiting Network.

The latest ITA Division I coaches poll has seen a change at the top of the men's rankings, with TCU taking over for Texas, after the Longhorns fell to Virginia 4-3 in Charlotteville Sunday. The women's team rankings are not published this week due to the upcoming National Team Indoor Championships. TCU got 12 of the 13 first place votes, with Wake Forest receiving one first place vote. Cal and Pepperdine moved into the Top 25, with Harvard and UCLA dropping out. Texas hosts TCU in Austin Friday at 6:30 Eastern.

The second set of Division I individual rankings released since the preseason rankings in August came out today, with not much having changed.  The Top 10 women are all the same, just shuffled around a little. NCAA fall singles champions Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia and Michael Zheng of Columbia stayed at No. 1 in singles. Zheng has gone 5-0 since the last rankings in December, while Vidmanova was 3-0 until her lost to North Carolina's Reese Brantmeier on Saturday. Brantmeier, now 5-1 since returning from injury this month, is up to 24 in the rankings.

The men's singles Top 10 did see a sharp rise by Oliver Tarvet of San Diego, who was No. 3 in the preseason rankings, but fell to 15 in the post-NCAA edition in December. He is now up to No. 2, while the previous No. 2, Sebastian Gorzny of Texas, fell to No. 10. Tarvet and Stian Klaassen continue to hold down the top spot in doubles.

NCAA fall doubles champions Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard of Virginia take over the No. 1 ranking in women's doubles.

Unlike the team rankings this time of year, the individual rankings are not a poll; they are calculated by a computer algorithm. Full ranking lists can be viewed by clicking on the heading.
