Sixteen-year-old David Filer Loses Battle with Brain Cancer

The junior tennis community learned of a tragic loss Sunday, when 16-year-old David Filer of South Bend, Indiana died, just over a year after having been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Many of you may have contributed to the GoFundMe established for David last February. The latest update from the organizer of that fundraiser was February 23, but there have been recent posts on social media confirming he died on Sunday, and there is now a date for the services on the website of the Palmer Funeral Home, where you can also send condolences to his family.

There are no words for this inexplicable, heart-breaking loss; I can only say I know how loved David was by his fellow junior players, and how supportive they were during his illness. I have heard there is a suggestion that the USTA Midwest section name a tournament in his honor, which would be an appropriate tribute to a promising life cut short.

Rest in peace David. May his memory be a blessing to all his friends and family.

This story has been so sad. He was such a great kid and an amazing player. My heart breaks for his family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Filer family. We can't imagine your life without your very special and talented David. I have been lighting candles for all of you at our St. Lucy Catholic Church in Racine, Wi. I will continue to do that asking for strength for all of you. You and David will never be forgotten by us...but always be thought of with love and prayers. Love, The Grandparents of Nolan Shaub! 🙏💕

I still can't come to terms with David's death to this day... I cry and remember him every day... he was a friend of my son Rafael Ferreira, and I can't imagine the pain of the family's loss.
