Quarterfinals Set at Division II and Division III NCAA Team Championships; Division I Women's Quarterfinals Wednesday in Orlando; USTA Pro Circuit Features $25Ks in Pensacola and Pelham

Today was a day off for the NCAA Division I Team Championships, with the rain day built into the schedule (the USTA's National Campus has only six indoor courts) not needed. Two years ago, the NCAA Division I Championships didn't see any rain, but there was a deluge of Love Bugs annoying everyone; this year, still no rain, but none of those swarming insects either.

While the remaining 16 Division I teams focused on practice and  Media Day today, Division II has begun its quarterfinals, with the men playing their Elite Eight matches today in Surprise Arizona, and the women taking the courts on Wednesday. Bobby Knight at College Tennis Today has been following the Division II tournament, and has posted his men's preview. Live streaming is available at NCAA.com.  Below are the quarterfinal matchups:

Men:

Columbus State[1] v Cameron[8]
Hawaii Hilo[5] v Concordia[NY][4]
Indianapolis[3] v Bluefield State[6]
Northwest Missouri State[7] v Barry[2]

Women:

Indianapolis[1] v St. Mary's[TX][8]
Hawaii Pacific[5] v Columbus State[4]
Central Oklahoma[3] v Indiana[PA][6]
Franklin Pierce[7] v Barry[2]

The quarterfinalists in Division III were determined over the weekend, with next Monday, May 24th, marking the start of the men's and women's team championships in Chattanooga Tennessee. The matchups:

Men:

Washington-St. Louis v George Fox
Trinity[TX] v Case Western
Emory v Brandeis
Johns Hopkins v Williams

Women:

Wesleyan v Washington & Lee
Kenyon v Mary Washington
Sewanee v Tufts
Emory v Southwestern[TX]

The Division I women's quarterfinals are Wednesday, with just one match per time slot. The 11 a.m. match between Georgia[3] and NC State[6] and the 2 p.m. match between Texas[2] and Florida State[7] will be available via the TennisONE app; Tennis Channel will be providing live coverage of the 5:30 p.m. match between Pepperdine[5] and UCLA[4] and the not before 7:30 p.m. match between No. 1 North Carolina and Duke.  Live scoring is available via the tournament website, under Schedule and Results.

I won't have time to follow this week's USTA Pro Circuit tournaments as much as I ordinarily would due to all the college tennis going on right now, but it's great to see the men back at the $25K level for the first time since February in Pensacola Florida.

Noah Rubin(Wake Forest) is the top seed, with wild card Christian Harrison the No. 2 seed. In addition to Harrison, wild cards were awarded to Evan Zhu(UCLA), who plays Harrison in the first round, and Mwendwa Mbitihi, who plays former Florida star Oliver Crawford in that same section of the draw. The fourth wild card went to Rowland Phillips of Jamaica.

Qualifiers include Americans Patrick Kypson(Texas A&M) and John Bernard(Florida State).

The women's $25K event in Pelham Alabama is unusual in that it has a 48 draw, with the 16 seeds getting a first round bye. Bonita Springs $100K champion Katie Volynets is the No. 11 seed; the top seed is veteran Jia-Jing Lu of China, with Jamie Loeb(North Carolina) the No. 2 seed.

Americans qualifying for the main draw yesterday were Reese Brantmeier, Brooklyn Olson, McKenna Schaefbauer, Kennedy Shaffer(Georgia), and Ashlyn Krueger.

The 15-year-old Olson won her first professional main draw match in today's opening round, beating lucky loser Kelly Williford(Virginia Tech) of the Dominican Republic 6-1, 6-4. Brantmeier and Krueger also won their first round matches today. Main draw wild cards were given to teens Elvina Kalieva, Alexandra Yepifanova, Sarah Hamner, Gabby Price, as well as Kara Leonard. Kalieva and Price both won their first round matches today, with Price beating Leonard 6-0, 6-0.
