My Interview with Raveena Kingsley; Fritz into ATP Memphis Semifinals with Dramatic Victory; Defending Champion Oklahoma Falls to Wake Forest at Men's Team Indoor

While at the Dow Corning Tennis Classic early last week, I spoke to Raveena Kingsley about her recent surge, including all the WTA Top 200 wins she had in Maui late last month. The 17-year-old high school senior has committed to LSU, but would prefer to bypass playing college tennis if her WTA ranking, now 375, continues to rise. The article, published today at the Tennis Recruiting Network, is here.

Last night at the ATP Memphis Open, Taylor Fritz beat one former NCAA champion, USC's Steve Johnson, in two tiebreakers. This afternoon, he beat another, Baylor Benjamin Becker, winning yet another tiebreaker, this one to end the 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5) match.

Fritz saw a 4-1 lead disappear in the first set, but broke when the 34-year-old German double faulted and hit a forehand wide with the score 4-5 30-all.

Fritz went up a break in the second set, but was broken back immediately and, assisted by two double faults when Fritz was serving at 5-5, Becker broke and held at love to send the match to a third set.

Becker was winning a majority of the points that went past ten shots, with Fritz making more errors, particularly at the beginning of the third set. He fell behind a break at 2-1, but broke back immediately, and neither player faced another break point until 5-5.  At 30-40, Fritz made a forehand error and Becker would have a chance to serve out the match.  He immediately went down 0-30, then won a long rally for 15-30. Fritz stayed with Becker in the next point's long rally, winning it with a difficult overhead. Fritz then forced an error with a ball on the baseline, and a tiebreaker would decide it.

Fritz went up a mini-break 3-1, but Becker got it back and the server held until 5-5, when Becker hit a forehand long. Fritz didn't get a first serve in on his first match point, but it was Becker than made the crucial error, hitting a backhand long to send Fritz into the semifinals. He will play 2007 World Junior champion Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, who defeated No. 3 seed Donald Young 7-6(3), 6-1. For more on both the Fritz and Berankis wins, see this article from the ATP website.

Fritz, who at 18 years and three months is the youngest American in an ATP semifinal since Michael Chang in 1989, will rise to around 113 in the ATP rankings with this win.  He has received a special exemption into next week's Delray Beach Open, and will play wild card Tim Smyczek in the first round. Also in the main draw is Noah Rubin, who received a wild card, while Tommy Paul was given a wild card into qualifying. The main draw is here. The qualifying draw, featuring Paul, Bjorn Fratangelo, Dennis Novikov, Jared Donaldson and Eric Quigley, is here.

I spoke with Fritz often at Wimbledon last year, before he had won a junior slam or a Challenger, although he had just earned his first ATP main draw win in Nottingham.  He was ranked No. 1 in the juniors at the time, where he finished the year, and was 679 in the ATP rankings. Here's that interview from the Tennis Recruiting Network.

Fritz has also advanced to the doubles semifinal, with Ryan Harrison. The wild card team defeated No. 2 seeds Treat Huey of the Philippines and Max Mirnyi of Belarus earlier in the week and Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak of New Zealand tonight 6-2, 6-7(4), 12-10.

At the ITA Men's National Team Indoor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, with the only team who didn't, No. 8 seed and defending champion Oklahoma, losing to No. 9 Wake Forest for the second time in two weeks, tonight by a 4-1 score.

There were however, three extremely close calls for higher seeds, with No. 2 seed Texas A&M squeezing past No. 15 Columbia 4-2, No. 4 seed Southern California overcoming No. 13 seed South Florida 4-3 and, and No. 7 seed UCLA beating No. 10 seed Georgia 4-3.

Bobby Knight has comments from UCLA coach Billy Martin on their win over Georgia at College Tennis Today.  The complete results of the eight matches today are below. All four quarterfinals will be on the six streamed courts at Boar's Head, starting at 9 a.m.

Ohio State(6) vs. North Carolina(3) 9 a.m.
UCLA(7) vs. Texas A&M(2) noon
Virginia(1) vs Wake Forest(9) 3:30 p.m.
Southern Cal(4) vs. TCU(5) 6:30 p.m.
