Singh Wins Challenger First Round, So Out of Indoor Championships; College Tennis Showcases; Serena, Oudin, Isner & Querrey to Play at UGA
We're heading for Connecticut early Thursday, (look for a link to my Tennis Recruiting Network October Aces to autopost around noon) but we won't be seeing Virginia's Sanam Singh playing at the ITA Indoor. Singh qualified for the main draw of the $50,000 Challenger being played in Charlottesville this week, and he won his first round match yesterday, defeating sixth seed Grega Zemlja of Slovenia, who has an ATP ranking of 156. Singh doesn't play his second round match against Scoville Jenkins until Thursday, so he had to withdraw from the competition at Yale, where he was to play both singles and doubles, with Houston Barrick. This allowed second alternate Patrico Alvarado of Southern Mississippi entry into the main draw, and since Singh was seeded, Eric Quigley of Kentucky goes from being a dangerous floater to the No. 8 seed. The South Carolina team of Diego Cubas and Ivan Machado replaced Singh and Barrick in the doubles draw.
For the draws, see the ITA tournament home page. Play begins with women's doubles at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, followed by men's doubles, women's singles and men's singles.
There are several USTA Sectional College Showcases set for this weekend and next. The Middle States has one in Philadelphia on Saturday and in Monroeville on the 14th. Eastern's is Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and the Mid-Atlantic is hosting its first Nov. 14th at Old Dominion. These are great opportunities to learn about playing college tennis, so consider attending if there's one near you.
The exhibition season in tennis is just around the corner, and Rock-n-Racquets will be making its first appearance in Athens, Georgia next month. Former University of Georgia star John Isner will participate in the Dec. 12th event, along with Sam Querrey (his rehab must be coming along as scheduled), Serena Williams and Melanie Oudin. Wayne Bryan will serve as MC. There are very inexpensive seats available for UGA students, faculty and staff beginning on Thursday. See georgiadogs.com for more information.

For detailed highlights of Singh's match(es), thesabre.com has some extended write ups in their tennis message board. That site also has a link to a webcast of the event. Starts 6pm Thursday. Also, Baylor's Lukacs had a knock down drag out match in the first round with Devvarman
Singh is playing awesome, he's my pick to win NCAA's. I think he has the potential to be as good as Devvarman, can't believe how hard he hits the ball for a little guy.
