Pepperdine Pair Wins Pacific Coast Doubles; Women's Pac-10 Powers Beat Each Other; Georgia Downs Ole Miss, Oudin Falls in Third Set Tiebreaker
It was a busy weekend in college tennis, but for the Pepperdine Waves, it wasn't dual matches that led to long days at the courts. The Malibu California school saw its two top doubles teams meet in the final of the 119th Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla. Andre Begemann and Omar Altmann, ranked only 41st in the nation, toppled USC's third-ranked team of Robert Farah and Robert Van't Hof in three sets in the semifinals, then went on to down teammates Bassam Beidas and James Lemke, who are unranked, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to win the championship. In women's action, Stanford, Cal, UCLA and USC all played, and although the results weren't part of the official Pac-10 standings, they certainly don't give any clue as to how the conference will play out this year. UCLA beat Stanford 4-3, Stanford beat USC 4-3, USC beat Cal 6-1, Cal beat UCLA 4-3. That's one win and one loss for all four teams.
On the men's side, No. 1 Virginia beat both Texas and Baylor, drawing a record crowd at home in the 5-2 victory over the Longhorns. But for me, the most interesting matchup of the weekend was today's SEC dual between No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Ole Miss in Athens. The Bulldogs, even without senior Travis Helgeson playing singles, defeated the Rebels 5-2, with Ole Miss's two points coming at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. For a full match report, see georgiadogs.com.
In the $25,000 Pro Circuit event final today in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., qualifier Melanie Oudin fell just short of upsetting No. 2 seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic, falling 6-3 5-7 7-6(5).
And Danielle Mills of the US captured the Grade 4 ITF in El Salvador, defeating compatriot Lauren McHale in the final. McHale won the doubles with Gabriela Mastromarino, also of the U.S.

Pepperdine dominated the doubles at the Pacific Coast Tournament judging from the results. It looked like a strong tournament.
Dont forget that Flores didnt play for UGA either. So basically UGA beat Ole Miss 5-2 without their top two guys.
The doubles portion of the UGA-Ole Miss match was spectacular. Think about this. At #2 unranked Helgerson and Garrapiz beat the number 4 team in the country. But even better was the performance of Varela and Bernstein at 3. Less than a month ago Klaeson and Poole defeated Georgia's #1 team of Schnugg and Hunt 8-4. Talk about stepping up. Varela was magnificent and Bernstein hit some timely winners and held them at bay with his big serve. Georgia will be tough to beat when there big guns Flores and Helgerson are free of injuries.
