Holiday Tennis Classic; Winter Nationals Updates

First Andy left a comment about it, then I got an email about it, and then I discovered this blog entry about the Georgia Tech Holiday Challenge held earlier this week in Atlanta. With Don Johnson, Donald Young, Ellis Ferreira (doubles only) and Bobby Reynolds participating, the level was obviously very high. Reynolds didn't win the singles. Click here to see who did. Don Kintner is going to get some disagreement about the best free tennis tournament (it has to be US Open qualifying, as noted by several commenters), but check out his blog "Hangin' Around the Court" and encourage him to write about the dual matches he attends this spring.

The Tennis Recruiting Network's Julie Wrege was in Arizona for the Winter Nationals and filed this wrap-up yesterday. Mike Henry of the Bradenton Herald writes about Sekou Bangoura's two 16s titles in Scottsdale here and the Tampa Tribune had this brief article on Alexandra Cercone's 18s win.

do you know anything about nicole gibbs winning a $10k in mexico city last month? seems like a pretty impressive accomplishment for a 93 girl. also, it's good to hear david roditi has a LARGE group of 1991 and 1992 boys in costa rica. this type of usta trip provides kids without traveling coaches a great opportunity to play high grade international itf's. i applaud the usta for providing this opportunity and hope they expand it to both sexes and more age groups.

a 1993 girl won orange bowl 18s also. larcher de brito should really be considered one of "our" girls as she has lived and trained here forever. noticed alexey grigorov won coffee bowl. watched him a year ago and wasn't impressed. watched him recently and he has really improved over the past 12 months. does anyone know where he trains?

There were about 10 US boys playing both the grade A in Mexico with Fowler making the quarters and Trombetta in he semis, and in Costa Rica both Fowler and Overbeek made the quarters in singles.

FYI...To the observer you don't need traveling coaches to play GradeA or higher level ITFs because the tourney picks up players at the airport, provides free room, food and transportation to and from the site. Many top ITF players travel to these tournamnets on thier own. The only cost to the player is the flight. Colette, not sure how to register so hope I did it right.

I disagree with larcher de brito being considered "one of our girls" since she still is shown as being from Portugal. This is yet another example of the USTA spending money on foreigners at the expense of US born and raised players.
