Tough day for the Americans. And each match started so promising. Williams was up a set and a break on Jones, Nevolo was up a set on Jebavy, and Thacher was up 4-1 on Evans. Then it all fell apart, although Williams and Thacher put up a fight throughout their matches.

Greg Jones has lived on the edge. He's dropped the first set in each match and has had to win a tiebreaker in each to stay alive. But he keeps getting it done. He must be a cool customer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-75934606616170971372007-09-05T21:24:00.000-04:002007-09-05T21:24:00.000-04:00To the dude:King and Jenkins played in qualifying ...To the dude:

King and Jenkins played in qualifying just like Egger. Egger's wild card had no bearing on them.

And Thacher did miss U.S. Open qualifying because of his family vacation. That's what was being talked about.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-66691668269641508682007-09-05T20:47:00.000-04:002007-09-05T20:47:00.000-04:00There is no wild card for the 16s Kalamazoo double...There is no wild card for the 16s Kalamazoo doubles champions. We assumed in Kalamazoo that they did, but we learned the USTA does not give an automatic wild card in that instance.Colette Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14905215531491180014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-59032619977930363232007-09-05T19:52:00.000-04:002007-09-05T19:52:00.000-04:00Colette, why didn't JT Sundling and Daniel Nyugen ...Colette, why didn't JT Sundling and Daniel Nyugen play the Junior Doubles as they won the 16s KZoo Doubles and were WC'd into the US Open juniors. Were they miffed that they didn't get the singles WC while the likes of Egger did? And I guess Thatcher decided to play here despite all the talk of him going on a family vacation. Jenkins and King only played doubles. I'm sure they would have done better that Egger. What are the powers to be thinking?!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-5574243575578055312007-09-05T18:05:00.000-04:002007-09-05T18:05:00.000-04:00Never really liked Serena until this tournament ev...Never really liked Serena until this tournament even though she is terribly out of shape and not prepared to play at a high level. If a male player had the body structure of Serena they wouldn't be able to beat the # 1500 in the ATP.

But just when I started to really appreciate her -she goes and makes a dumb statement about "lucky shots" by Henin.

Back to giving her a 10 out of 100.

I still can't believe for a player to be that out of shape and still get some Wins is absolutely amazing.

I don't know if that is a credit to Serena or a minus to the WTA!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-59772479618124115882007-09-05T17:48:00.000-04:002007-09-05T17:48:00.000-04:00Austin,I agree with you twice in one day.For Seren...Austin,
I agree with you twice in one day.

For Serena to say that Henin won because of lucky shots was just plain wrong!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-9987991100722627112007-09-05T16:56:00.000-04:002007-09-05T16:56:00.000-04:00Has Serena ever been beaten in a match? Then again, I'm sure Venus will challenge her for the title if she loses. That is the one book Richard Williams forgot to read when he was teaching them how to play tennis.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-60484971644829899792007-09-05T16:35:00.000-04:002007-09-05T16:35:00.000-04:00and to think- he was about to miss this opportunit...and to think- he was about to miss this opportunity!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10016685.post-89537423575797325772007-09-04T22:47:00.000-04:002007-09-04T22:47:00.000-04:00I'd have to say that Thacher is the favorite in hi...I'd have to say that Thacher is the favorite in his quarter of the draw. This could be his introduction to the rest of the world.

Every time there's an article about Thacher, it talks about the importance that he places on academics. And clearly that's true. But what are the chances of him playing four years in college if he's the player everyone thinks he is? He could hold his own on the Futures circuit right now, and he still has a year before he starts college. Is he really going to postpone a promising pro career for up to four years? Isner stayed four years, but he was a late bloomer. If Thacher dominates in college the way I think he will, it's hard to imagine him staying more than two years. But maybe he really is that committed to getting a degree. If so, it's college tennis' gain and pro tennis' loss.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
